Motor Booty Affair
''Motor Booty Affair'' is the seventh album by funk band Parliament. Released on November 20, 1978. It contains two of the group's most popular tracks, "Rumpofsteelskin" and " Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop)" which went to number one on the Billboard Soul Singles chart. Artist Overton Loyd prepared the cover of ''Motor Booty Affair''. The main release consisted of a gate-fold album cover featuring a pop-up rendition of the city of Atlantis, with Loyd's artwork on the front and back covers. His illustrations included cartoon portraits of some of the "characters" mentioned in the songs on the album, including "Mr. Wiggles". It also included cardboard cutout figures featuring Loyd's cartoon illustrations of most of the characters mentioned in the songs. There was also a picture disk, with Loyd's illustration printed directly on the vinyl LP. The album was Parliament's fifth consecutive gold album (500,000 copies sold). Parliament (band)
Parliament was an American funk band formed in the late 1960s by George Clinton as part of his Parliament-Funkadelic collective. More commercial and less rock-oriented than its sister act Funkadelic, Parliament drew on science-fiction and outlandish theatrics in their work. The band scored a number of Top 10 hits, including the million-selling 1976 single " Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)," and Top 40 albums such as '' Mothership Connection'' (1975). History Parliament was originally The Parliaments, a doo-wop vocal group based at a Plainfield, New Jersey barbershop. Garry Shider
Garry Marshall Shider (July 24, 1953 – June 16, 2010) was an American musician and guitarist. He was musical director of the P-Funk All-Stars for much of their history. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, with fifteen other members of Parliament-Funkadelic. Early life Shider was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. At the age of ten and under the guidance of his father Jesse, Garry and his brothers played and sang behind many gospel artists of the time including legends such as Shirley Caesar, The Five Blind Boys, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, and others. As a youth Shider was also a regular customer at the Plainfield barbershop owned by George Clinton, where the future members of Parliament would sing doo-wop for customers and counsel local youngsters. Maceo Parker (; born February 14, 1943) is an American funk and soul jazz saxophonist, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s, Parliament-Funkadelic in the 1970s and Prince in the 2000s. Parker was a prominent soloist on many of Brown's hit recordings, and a key part of his band, playing alto, tenor and baritone saxophones. Since the early 1990s, he has toured under his own name. Fred Wesley
Fred Wesley (born July 4, 1943) is an American trombonist who worked with James Brown in the 1960s and 1970s and Parliament-Funkadelic in the second half of the 1970s. Biography Wesley was born the son of a high school teacher and big band leader in Columbus, Georgia, and raised in Mobile, Alabama. As a child he took piano and later trumpet lessons. He played baritone horn and trombone in school, and at around age 12 his father brought a trombone home, whereupon he switched (eventually permanently) to trombone. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was a pivotal member of James Brown's bands, playing on many hit recordings including " Say it Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud," " Mother Popcorn" and co-writing tunes such as "Hot Pants." Cordell Mosson
Cordell "Boogie" Mosson (born Cardell Mosson; October 16, 1952 – April 18, 2013) was an American bassist who was a member of Parliament-Funkadelic. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award Grammy in 2019. Mosson was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey, but grew up in Plainfield, New Jersey. Biography A good friend of Garry Shider, the two left Plainfield, New Jersey in their teens for Canada. They joined a band called United Soul, which came to the attention of George Clinton, who had known Shider as a youth in Plainfield. In 1971 Clinton produced several tracks by United Soul with input from members of Funkadelic. The songs "I Miss My Baby" and "Baby I Owe You Something Good" were released as a one-off single by Westbound Records in 1971 under the group name U.S. Music with Funkadelic. Phelps "Catfish" Collins (October 17, 1943 – August 6, 2010) was an American musician. A lead guitarist and rhythm guitarist, he is known mostly for his work in the P-Funk collective. Although frequently overshadowed by his younger brother, Bootsy Collins, Catfish played on many important and influential records by James Brown, Parliament, Funkadelic, and Bootsy's Rubber Band. Early life Phelps Collins was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the older brother of William "Bootsy" Collins, whom he encouraged musically from a young age. Dawn Silva
Dawn Silva is an American funk vocalist. Silva started her career as a background vocalist for Sly and the Family Stone. She joined Parliament-Funkadelic in 1977. She was the only original Brides of Funkenstein member to continue through the Brides' entire career. In 1978, with Lynn Mabry, she released the successful '' Funk Or Walk''. The Bride's first single release on Atlantic Records, "Disco To Go", sold over five hundred thousand units, and was certified Gold. In 1979, with Sheila Horne and Jeanette McGruder, she released the top single "Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy," voted by '' Rolling Stone'' in 2001 as one of the top 50 coolest albums ever released. Lynn Mabry (born March 21, 1958) is an American singer. Early life Born in Vallejo, California, Mabry's mother enjoyed playing piano and her father was a choir director and radio DJ. They divorced when she was 3 years old. Career She got her start in Sly and the Family Stone, along with Dawn Silva. In 1977, she joined P-Funk. Jeanette Washington is a funk vocalist best known as a member of the band Parliament. Washington appeared as a background singer on recordings by James Brown in 1975. That year she joined Parliament with Debbie Wright, becoming the first female members of the group. She recorded with Parliament (1975–1980) and Funkadelic (1978–1980), both featuring George Clinton, and with the Sweat Band featuring Bootsy Collins and Maceo Parker (1980).
