''Mother'' (stylized as '' ther'') is the seventh studio album by American metalcore band Veil of Maya. The album was released on May 12, 2023, through Sumerian Records and was produced by Zach Jones. Background and promotion On July 24, 2019, Veil of Maya's follow-up to their 2017 album '' False Idol'' appeared to be in production with the band sharing various photos from the studio with producer Taylor Larson on their social media. On October 30, the band have returned to the studio for their new album and began initial sessions on the effort with producer Taylor Larson. According to their social media, those sessions have resumed with Larson back behind the boards. On October 8, 2021, the group's guitarist Marc Okubo revealed that the reason for the relative delay of their new record comes from the band having decided to scrap much of what they had previously recorded for it. Veil of Maya is an American metalcore band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 2004. The group consists of guitarist Marc Okubo, drummer Sam Applebaum, bassist Danny Hauser and vocalist Lukas Magyar. They are currently signed to Sumerian Records and have released seven studio albums. Their seventh studio album, ''Mother'', was released on May 12, 2023. History Formation and demo (2004–2006) Veil of Maya formed in 2004 in Chicago, Illinois after melodic death metal band Insurrection broke up, which led members Marc (lead guitar), Sam (drums) and Kris (bassist) to start up the new project. Guitarist Timothy Marshall and vocalist Adam Clemans joined shortly thereafter. After recording a self-released demo in 2005, guitarist Scott Okarma briefly joined the group, participating in local shows and early touring. Progressive Metal
Progressive metal (often shortened to prog metal) is a broad fusion music genre melding heavy metal music, heavy metal and progressive rock, combining the loud "aggression" and amplified electric guitar, guitar-driven sound of the former with the more experimental, cerebral or quasi-classical compositions of the latter. Djent () is a subgenre of progressive metal, termed for an onomatopoeia of the guitar sound that characterizes it. It was originally launched under Harris Publications in the spring of 2000 by Tom Beaujour and Brad Tolinski, who envisioned it as an American version of ''Mojo (magazine), Mojo''. After five issues, it was relaunched in late 2001 with a focus on heavy music. The magazine features both established acts and up-and-comers in heavy music.
