Moso Natural Region
The Natural regions of Burundi () are geographical subdivisions of Burundi that date to colonial times. They can be broadly grouped into the Plain zone in the west beside Lake Tanganyika and the East African Rift valley, the Congo-Nile ridge, the Central Plateaus and the Depressions to the north, east and south of the plateaus. Context Burundi is mostly between above sea level. The highest ridges reach and the lowest area is at beside Lake Tanganyika. It can be divided into four general topological zones: the Plain zone, holding the natural region of Imbo, with an altitude less than ; the Congo-Nile ridge including the Mumirwa and Mugamba natural regions; the Central Plateaus including Kirimiro, Buyogoma, Bututsi, Bweru and Buyenzi; and the Depressions of Moso in the east, Buragane in the south, and Bugesera in the north. Tutsi
The Tutsi ( ), also called Watusi, Watutsi or Abatutsi (), are an ethnic group of the African Great Lakes region. They are a Bantu languages, Bantu-speaking ethnic group and the second largest of three main ethnic groups in Rwanda and Burundi (the other two being the largest Bantu peoples, Bantu ethnic group Hutu and the African Pygmies, Pygmy group of the Twa). Historically, the Tutsi were Pastoralism, pastoralists and filled the ranks of the warriors' caste. Before 1962, they regulated and controlled Rwandan society, which was composed of Tutsi aristocracy and Hutu commoners, utilizing a clientship structure. They occupied the dominant positions in the sharply stratified society and constituted the ruling class. Rutana Province
Rutana Province is one of the 18 provinces of Burundi. It contains the Kagera waterfalls, and the Nyakazu Fault. Location Rutana Province is in the southeast of Burundi and borders Tanzania to the east. Makamba Province is to the south, Bururi Province and Gitega Province to the west and Ruyigi Province to the north. The west of the province is in the Buragane natural region, the northwest in the Buyogoma natural region and the east in the Kumoso natural region. History Rutana Province was originally created on 26 September 1960 as part of national political and administrative reforms initiated by the Belgian colonial administration in Ruanda-Urundi. Cankuzo Province
Cankuzo Province is one of the 18 provinces of Burundi. Located in the eastern part of the country, the province covers an area of 1,965 km. The provincial capital is Cankuzo. It is Burundi's least populated province. Location Cankuzo Province is in the east of Burundi, bordered by Tanzania to the northeast and southeast. Ntare II Of Burundi
Ntare II Rutaganzwa Rugamba (c. 1800 - c. 1850) was the king of Burundi. He was the son of king Mwambutsa I Mbariza and Msabiyije, a wife from the influential Bashoka Tutsi clan. The early years of his reign began with a regency, which was common in Burundian royal history. Ntare's inherited kingdom was approximately half the size of the present-day Burundi. Early in his rule, he came into conflict with Nsoro Nyabarega, the ruler of Bugesera. Eventually, around 1840, Ntare conquered the Buyogoma with the support of his son Rwasha. He achieved the greatest expansion in the history of Burundi, doubling the territory. Gitega Province
Gitega is one of the 18 provinces of Burundi. Its capital is Gitega, which is also the national capital. It has a population of 725,223 as of 2008 and an area of . History After Burundi attained full independence on 1 July 1962, there was a military coup d'état in which the king was overthrown and monarchy disbanded in 1966. When King Ntare V tried to reinstate his kingdom, he was assassinated in 1972 at the Royal Palace of Gitega. On 26 April 1996, army attacks at Buhoro killed some 230 civilians. On 21 October, some 70 Tutsi students were burnt alive at Kibimba. In March 2007, President Pierre Nkurunziza announced that Burundi had plans to transfer the capital from Bujumbura to Gitega. Muramvya Province
Muramvya Province is one of the 18 provinces of Burundi. The capital city is Muramvya. In 2007 the province was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
