Morse is a List of Saskatchewan provincial electoral districts, former provincial electoral division for the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan, Legislative Assembly of the province of Saskatchewan, Canada, centred on the town of Morse, Saskatchewan. The district was created before the 1912 Saskatchewan general election, 3rd Saskatchewan general election in 1912, and abolished before the 1995 Saskatchewan general election, 23rd Saskatchewan general election in 1995. It was the riding of List of premiers of Saskatchewan, Premier Ross Thatcher. Henry Edmund Houze
Henry Edmund Houze (August 13, 1880 – March 16, 1959) was a Canadian veterinarian, farmer, rancher and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Gravelbourg from 1944 to 1948 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born in Smiths Falls, Ontario and came west in 1908, settling on a homestead near Meyronne, Saskatchewan. Houze married Mabel Forest. He raised Hereford cattle and a few horses. 1917 Saskatchewan General Election
The 1917 Saskatchewan general election was held on June 26, 1917, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. After replacing Walter Scott as leader of the Liberal Party of Saskatchewan and premier of the province, William M. Martin led the party to its fourth consecutive victory, winning all but 8 of the 59 seats in the legislature. The Conservative Party of Wellington Willoughby continued to lose popular support. This was the first Saskatchewan election in which women were allowed to vote and run for office. However, none were declared elected in this vote; the first Saskatchewan woman elected an MLA was after a 1918 by-election. The Non-Partisan League, forerunner of the Progressive Party of Saskatchewan, nominated candidates for the first time, although none were successful. Saskatchewan Progressive Conservative Party
The Progressive Conservative Party of Saskatchewan is a conservative political party in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Founded in 1905 by former Northwest Territories Premier Frederick Haultain, the party was first known as the Provincial Rights Party. In 1912, its name changed to the Conservative Party of Saskatchewan, and in 1942 it adopted its current name. Members are commonly known as Tories. The party has formed government in Saskatchewan three times, first in a coalition government from 1929 to 1934, and then in consecutive majority governments from 1982 to 1991. The party was badly damaged by an expense fraud scandal in the 1990s. In 1997, the party went dormant when much of its membership migrated to the newly established Saskatchewan Party. Harold Martens
Harold Arthur Martens (September 8, 1941 – January 8, 2023) was a Canadian rancher, farmer and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Morse from 1982 to 1995 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Progressive Conservative. Life and career Martens was born in Herbert, Saskatchewan on September 8, 1941, the son of Eugene and Lydia Martens. Martens served on the council for the rural municipality of Saskatchewan Landing, serving as reeve from 1977 to 1978. He was also a member of the senate for the University of Regina. Martens served in the Saskatchewan cabinet as Associate Minister of Agriculture and Food. After the Devine government was defeated, he served as deputy opposition leader and opposition finance critic. Martens retired from provincial politics in 1995 and returned to ranching. Reginald John Gross
Reginald John "Reg" Gross (born October 3, 1948) is a consultant and former political figure in Saskatchewan, Canada. He represented Gravelbourg from 1971 to 1975 and Morse from 1978 to 1982 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a New Democratic Party (NDP) member. He was born in Vanguard, Saskatchewan, the son of Edward William Gross and Emilie T. Biesick, both natives of Germany. In 1974, he married Debbie McDonald. Gross was defeated by Jack Wiebe when he ran in the Morse provincial riding in 1975 and then defeated Wiebe in the 1978 general election. Jack Wiebe
John Edward Neil "Jack" Wiebe (May 31, 1936 – April 16, 2007) was a Canadian farmer and politician. He served as a provincial politician, the 18th lieutenant governor of Saskatchewan and also as a Senator. Born in Herbert, Saskatchewan, Wiebe graduated from the University of Saskatchewan after which he founded a major farming operation in Main Centre and was owner and president of L&W Feeders Ltd. from 1970 to 1985. He attended Luther College high school and graduated in 1953. He was a third generation resident of Herbert. His great-grandfather, Jacob Wiebe, a Low German Mennonite, emigrated from Russia to Kansas in 1874. His grandfather, John F.D. Wiebe, settled in Saskatchewan in 1905 and became Herbert's first mayor when the community was incorporated as a township in 1912. James William Gibson (1888 – January 28, 1965) was a Scottish-born political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Morse from 1946 to 1960 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born in Edinburgh, the son of Mark Gibson, and came to Canada with his parents in 1904, settling on a farm near Caron. In 1917, he married Isabelle Thomson. Sidney Merlin Spidell
Sidney Merlin Spidell (December 19, 1900 – February 1997) was an educator and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Morse from 1944 to 1946 in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan as a Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) member. He was born in Parkdale, Nova Scotia, the son of Sidney Freeman Spidell and Lucinda Ann Saunders, and was educated in Parkdale, in Mortlach, Saskatchewan and at the University of Saskatchewan. Spidell married Mildred Hazel Johnson in 1937. He was a public school and high school principal. He lived in Central Butte, Saskatchewan. Spidell resigned his seat in the provincial legislature in December 1945 and moved to eastern Canada.
