Morphett Street, Adelaide
Morphett Street is a main street in the west of the city centre of Adelaide, South Australia, parallel to King William Street and numbered from north to south. At its northern end it is part of the West End of Adelaide, a thriving cultural and entertainment precinct, with the Lion Arts Centre on the south-western corner of its junction with North Terrace. Location The street runs from south to north between South Terrace and North Terrace, and passes around and through two of the five squares in the Adelaide city centre, Light Square and Whitmore Square. At Hindley Street it transforms into the start of the bridge which crosses North Terrace (at which point its name changes to Montefiore Road), the railway yards and the River Torrens. Adelaide city centre () is the inner city locality of Adelaide, Greater Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is known by locals simply as "the City" or "Town" to distinguish it from Greater Adelaide and from the City of Adelaide local government area (which also includes North Adelaide and from the Adelaide Park Lands, Park Lands around the whole city centre). Morphett Street Brewery
The Morphett Street Brewery was a brewer of beer in Adelaide, South Australia. History John Reid ( – c. 24 November 1863) and Isaiah Reid (c. 1832 – 9 April 1877) had a licensed grocery shop on a half acre of land on Morphett Street near North Terrace in the Adelaide city centre from 1857, then began brewing there from 1859. After the death of his brother, Isaiah Reid took on John Burn Harrison as a partner, then proved insolvent 1866. In 1868, which may have been Reid's last year of operation, their production was of beer. This made the Morphett Street Brewery the smallest in the city; one third that of Simms & Chapman's West End Brewery and half that of Syme & Sison's Pirie Street Brewery. Their pale ale was bottled partly by Noltenius and partly by Aldridge. The factory was then taken over by Fred Fuller & Co. who continued operating on the premises until perhaps as late as 1873. Lewis Cohen (mayor)
Sir Lewis Cohen (23 December 1849 – 24 June 1933) was a businessman who was a Member of the Parliament of South Australia, South Australian Parliament for 10 years and served on the Adelaide City Council for 30 years. He was List of mayors and lord mayors of Adelaide, Mayor of Adelaide 1889–1890, 1901–1904, and 1909–1911, and then Lord Mayor 1921–1923. He was Knight Bachelor, knighted in 1924. Life Cohen was born in Liverpool, where his father had a clothing business. At age two he was taken with his family to Sydney to set up business there. Nine years later with the business running successfully, the family returned to England, and Lewis was sent to Jewish school at Edmonton, London, Edmonton. Sir Moses Haim Montefiore, 1st Baronet, (24 October 1784 – 28 July 1885) was a British financier and banker, activist, Philanthropy, philanthropist and Sheriffs of the City of London, Sheriff of London. Jacob Barrow Montefiore (1801–1895) was a member of the South Australian Colonization Commission in London from 1835 to 1839, a body appointed by the British Government under King William IV to oversee implementation of the ''South Australia Act 1834'', which established the Colony of South Australia. Montefiore Hill
Montefiore Hill is a small hill in North Adelaide, South Australia, which affords a view over the Adelaide city centre. Location and description The hill lies within the northern Adelaide Parklands, within the area known as Park 26: Adelaide Oval/Tarntanya Wama park. It is at the northern end of Montefiore Road, near its junction with a small road known as Montefiore Hill. The site is well known as the location of Light's Vision, a statue of founder and planner of Adelaide William Light, positioned in such a way that his finger points towards the Adelaide city centre. The view across the city has been somewhat impeded by the development of the Adelaide Oval in 2012–2013. Mercury CX, formerly Media Resource Centre (MRC), is a not-for-profit film and television training organisation based in the Lion Arts Centre on the corner of Morphett Street and North Terrace, Adelaide, South Australia, which aims to give screening opportunities to emerging South Australian film, video and digital media artists.
