49er (dinghy)
The 49er and 49er FX is a two-handed skiff (sailing), skiff-type high-performance sailing dinghy. The two crew work on different roles with the helmsman, helm making many tactical decisions, as well as steering, and the crew doing most of the sail control. Both of the crew are equipped with their own Trapeze (sailing), trapeze and sailing is done while cantilevered over the water to the fullest extent to balance against the sails. The 49er was designed by Julian Bethwaite (the son of Frank Bethwaite) and developed by a consortium consisting of Bethwaites, Performance Sailcraft Japan, Peter Johnston, and Ovington boats. 4 (four) is a number, numeral and digit. It is the natural number following 3 and preceding 5. It is a square number, the smallest semiprime and composite number, and is considered unlucky in many East Asian cultures. The International 420 Dinghy is a sailing dinghy popular for racing and teaching. The hull is fiberglass with internal buoyancy tanks. The 420 has a bermuda rig, spinnaker and trapeze. It has a large sail-area-to-weight ratio, and is designed to plane easily. The 420 is an International class recognised by World Sailing. The name refers to the boat's length of . History The International 420 was designed by Christian Maury in France in the year 1959. The class developed rapidly in France, being adopted nationally as a youth trainer for the larger Olympic class International 470. The Farr 30, originally called the Mumm 30, is a sailboat that was designed by Bruce Farr as a one design racer and first built in 1995. The boat was the one design class for the Tour de France à la voile from 1999 to 2010, until it was replaced by the M34 in 2011. The design was originally named for its sponsor, champagne producer G. H. Mumm. When the sponsorship ended in 2007, the class was renamed after the designer instead. At one time a World Sailing international class, it gave up its status in 2018 and the class club ceased operations in 2020.
