The Jam
The Jam were an English mod revival/ punk rock band formed in 1972 at Sheerwater Secondary School in Woking, Surrey. They released 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their break-up in December 1982, including four number one hits. As of 2007, " That's Entertainment" and " Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero?" remain the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK. They released one live album and six studio albums, the last of which, '' The Gift'', reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. When the group disbanded in 1982, their first 15 singles were re-released and all placed within the top 100. While the Jam shared the "angry young man" outlook and fast tempo of the mid-1970s British punk rock movement, in contrast with it the band wore smartly tailored suits reminiscent of English pop-bands in the early 1960s and incorporated mainstream 1960s rock and R&B influences into its sound, particularly from the Who's work of that p ... Town Called Malice
"Town Called Malice" is a song recorded by British band the Jam from the album '' The Gift''. It debuted at number one on the UK Singles Chart in February 1982. Overview The title is a play on words of the 1950 Nevil Shute novel '' A Town Like Alice'', although Paul Weller says he had not read the book at the time. It was a double A-side single release featuring " Precious" as the flip side. A 12" version was also available with a live version of "Town Called Malice" backed by an extended version of "Precious". Paul Weller has said that it was written about his hometown Woking as a result of his teenage experiences there. The ''Irish Independent'' described the song, like "Going Underground", as a " class-war tirade set to a post-punk northern soul groove". Released as the first single from the album on 29 January 1982, it entered the chart at number one on the UK Singles Chart, staying at the top for three weeks, and preventing " Golden Brown" by the Stranglers from reachin ... Festive Overture
The ''Festive Overture'' ( rus, Праздничная увертюра, Prazdnichnaya uvertyura), Op. 96 is an orchestral work composed by Dmitri Shostakovich in 1954. Commissioned for the Bolshoi Theatre's celebration of the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution, the score has since become one of the most enduring of Shostakovich's occasional scores. Background At the time the ''Festive Overture'' was composed, Shostakovich was engaged with the Bolshoi Theatre as a musical consultant. According to Lev Lebedinsky, the commission resulted from an impromptu visit to the composer's apartment by Vassili Nebolsin, who came to express the Bolshoi's urgent need of a celebratory work on short notice. With only three days to meet the deadline, Shostakovich agreed to provide an appropriate work and immediately began to compose the ''Festive Overture''. Within an hour, Nebolsin began to send couriers to the composer's apartment to pick up the score page by completed page, who then too ...
