Moonah is a residential locality in the local government area (LGA) of City of Glenorchy, Glenorchy in the Hobart LGA Region, Hobart LGA region of Tasmania. The locality is about south-east of the town of Glenorchy, Tasmania, Glenorchy. The 2016 Australian census, 2016 census recorded a population of 5421 for the state suburb of Moonah. It is a suburb in the city of Hobart, located approximately 5 km north of the central business district of Hobart, and lying directly north of the inner city suburb New Town, Tasmania, New Town. History Moonah was gazetted as a locality in 1961. The name has been in use since 1895. It is believed to be an Aboriginal Tasmanians, Aboriginal word for "gum tree". Originally land given free to settlers along the banks of the New Town Rivulet, this area eventually became known as the suburbs of New Town, Tasmania, New Town and Moonah. ''Melaleuca'' () is a genus of nearly 300 species of plants in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae, commonly known as paperbarks, honey-myrtles, bottlebrushes or tea-trees (although the last name is also applied to species of ''Leptospermum''). Description ''Melaleuca preissiana'' is a shrub or small tree sometimes growing to tall with papery bark or sometimes pale-coloured, hard bark. Its leaves are arranged alternately and are long, wide, flat, narrow elliptic to narrow egg-shaped with the end tapering to a point. The flowers are usually white, but sometimes a shade of cream or yellow. They are arranged in spikes on the ends of branches which continue to grow after flowering and sometimes in the upper leaf axils.
