Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers
The Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers were a Canadian football team and a member of the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union, a league that preceded the Canadian Football League. The team existed from 1872 to 1935. The Montreal AAA sponsored the Montreal Football Club, founded April 8, 1872. The Montreal Football Club joined the Quebec Rugby Football Union in 1883 and used the AAA grounds to play its games. Jeff Russel
Jeffrey Cameron Russel (October 27, 1900 – May 3, 1926) was a Canadian football player remembered as a star with the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers and his early accidental death. Life and career Russel was born October 27, 1900, in Ouray, Colorado, where his father Hugh Yelverton "Bert" Russel, a graduate of McGill University in mining engineering and a former amateur hockey and football player, was managing a mine. The family returned to Montreal in 1909 where Jeff was attended Selwyn House School and Lower Canada College and participated in athletics. In 1917, he enrolled at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario and became a halfback for the RMC Redmen until graduating in 1920 with the Governor General's Academic Medal. He played for McGill University in Montreal from 1920 to 1922. Russel entered McGill to continue his studies in electrical engineering and was commissioned as a lieutenant in the militia. Gordon Perry (Canadian Football)
Clarence Gordon Perry Sr. (March 18, 1903 – September 19, 2003) was a star football player in the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union (predecessor to the Canadian Football League's (CFL) East Division) for the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers. He was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1970 and into the Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. A multi-sport athlete, Perry was also a life member and past president of the Ottawa Curling Club. Since 1961, the club has held the year-ending "Gordie Perry Bonspiel" in his honour. Perry won the "Royal Jubilee" curling title in 1953 using iron stones, and then won the title again in 1956 using granite. He was also the past president of the Governor General's Curling Club. He was the skip of one of the two Ottawa Curling Club rinks that won the Quebec Challenge Cup in 1957. Percival Molson
Captain Percival Talbot "Percy" Molson, MC (August 14, 1880 – July 5, 1917) was a Canadian star athlete and soldier. After an outstanding sports career with McGill University, Molson joined its administration. Molson died fighting in World War I. In his will, he donated funds for McGill to build its football stadium, named Percival Molson Memorial Stadium in his honour. Frank McGill
Air Vice-Marshal Francis Scholes ‘Frank’ McGill, CB (June 20, 1894 – June 28, 1980) was a prominent member of Canada's military, having been an air vice marshal in the RCAF, and a considerable sports figure, amongst other things a star football player in the Canadian Football League for the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers. Billy Hughes (Canadian Football)
Wilfred Perry "Billy" Hughes (1888 – August 28, 1955) was a Canadian football and ice hockey coach and player. Biography Hughes was born in Renfrew, Ontario in 1888 and played both football and ice hockey while a student at McGill University in Montreal. He also played ice hockey with the Montreal Stars, champions of the 1914–15 Montreal Hockey League and holders of the 1915 Art Ross Trophy. He was a football coach for several teams: Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers (1919-1921 and 1928–1930), Hamilton Tigers (1932), Queen's University (1922–1926), Ottawa Rough Riders (1935–1936), Montreal Bulldogs (1940–1941), Lachine RCAF Station Flyers (1942–1943) and Montreal Hornets (1945). The Grey Cup () is both the championship game of the Canadian Football League (CFL) and the trophy awarded to the victorious team playing in the namesake championship of professional Canadian football. The 19th Grey Cup was the 1931 Canadian Rugby Union championship game that was played at Percival Molson Memorial Stadium in Montreal, between the Regina Roughriders and the Montreal AAA Winged Wheelers. The hometown Winged Wheelers shut-out the Roughriders 22–0.
