Mayen-Koblenz
Mayen-Koblenz is a district (''Kreis'') in the north of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Neighboring districts are (from north clockwise) Ahrweiler, Neuwied, Westerwaldkreis, district-free Koblenz, Rhein-Lahn, Rhein-Hunsrück, Cochem-Zell, and Vulkaneifel. History The district was created in 1973 when the two districts, Mayen and Koblenz, were merged. The district has been 'twinned' with the Borough of Waverley in Surrey in southern England since 1982. Geography The two main rivers of the district are the Rhine and the Moselle, which join at the ''Deutsches Eck'' in Koblenz. In the west of the district are the Eifel mountains. These also include the large lake, the ''Laacher See'', a volcanic caldera formed 12000 years ago. Coat of arms The coat of arms combine the elements of the two precursor districts. Löwenburg And Philippsburg
On a hill spur above the Eifel village of Monreal in Germany's Elzbach valley, at a height of , stand two neighbouring ruined hill castles: the Löwenburg, also called Monreal Castle (german: Burg Monreal), and the Philippsburg. The latter is also known locally as ''das Rech'' (the Deer). History The spur castle of Löwenburg was first recorded in 1229. Its builder was Count Hermann III of Virneburg, who ironically built it on the territory of his brother, Philip, following a partition agreement. The resulting fraternal feud was subsequently settled later, however, in a legal treaty and Philip relinquished his rights over the region to his brother. The Philippsburg was also built in the 13th century. Its small size, in comparison with the ''Löwen'' (lion) gave rise to its local nickname, the ''Rech'' (deer). Markus Meurer
Markus Meurer (born 28 April 1959 in Monreal, Germany), is a German outsider artist. He transforms found objects into sculptures and collages. Life and work Markus Meurer learned already as a child how to make figures using wire and pliers. His father, who was an Outsider Art artist himself, taught Markus in his early years how to use these tools to make objects. But while the father built items like motorbikes in as realistic a fashion as possible, the son created his pieces with great, free spirit. He connected found objects, things and materials that were normally considered trash, with wire, giving them a new life. He transformed these artifacts into mythic creations, hybrid creatures of animal, man, and machine. Since he could not support himself with his art, he earned some money with casual jobs, anything that came his way. Up to 2006 he lived in the house of his parents in Monreal, Eifel, Germany.
