Monochoria
''Monochoria'' was originally a genus of aquatic plants in the water hyacinth family, Pontederiaceae. Currently, it has been reduced to a subgenus of Pontederia, ''Pontederia'' subg. ''Monochoria'', represented by ten species (listed below). Its species are native to tropical and subtropical Africa, Asia, and Oceania. They live in the water or in wet soils. They produce leaves on long petioles and some are cultivated for their attractive flowers. Species *''Pontederia africana'' (Solms) M.Pell. & C.N.Horn *'' Pontederia australasica'' (Ridl.) Monochoria Vaginalis
''Monochoria vaginalis'' is a species of flowering plant in the Pontederiaceae, water hyacinth family known by several common names, including heartshape false pickerelweed and oval-leafed pondweed. It is native to much of Asia and across many of the Pacific Islands, and it is known in other areas as an introduced species. It is often an invasive noxious weed, and is listed on the United States Federal Noxious Weed List. An aquatic plant, it is invasive in Paddy field, rice paddies and other water bodies. This is an annual or perennial herb growing in water from a small rhizome. It is quite variable in morphology (biology), morphology. The shiny green leaves are up to about 12 centimeters long and 10 wide and are borne on rigid, hollow petiole (botany), petioles. The inflorescence bears 3 to 25 flowers which open underwater and all around the same time. Each has six purple-blue tepals just over a centimeter long. The fruit is a capsule about a centimeter long which contains many ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Pontederiaceae
Pontederiaceae is a family of flowering plants. The APG IV system of 2016 (unchanged from the APG III system of 2009, the APG II system of 2003 and the APG system of 1998) places the family in the order Commelinales, in the commelinid clade, in the monocots. It is a small family of heterostylous aquatic plants, occurring in tropical and subtropical waters. Charles Darwin was interested in the specialized form of heterostyly found in the family, known as tristyly. Not all of the species are heterostylous. The family contains two genera with around 40 known species. It is best known for the water hyacinth (''Pontederia crassipes''), which is an invasive species in many waterways. The highly modified '' Heteranthera gardneri'' is a submerged aquatic with a two-flowered pseudanthium. Taxonomy The two genera within this family are: *''Heteranthera'' Ruiz & Pav. (including '' Eurystemon'', '' Hydrothrix'', '' Scholleropsis'', and '' Zosterella'') *'' Pontederia'' L. (including ... Aquatic Plant
Aquatic plants are plants that have adapted to living in aquatic environments ( saltwater or freshwater). They are also referred to as hydrophytes or macrophytes to distinguish them from algae and other microphytes. A macrophyte is a plant that grows in or near water and is either emergent, submergent, or floating. In lakes and rivers macrophytes provide cover for fish, substrate for aquatic invertebrates, produce oxygen, and act as food for some fish and wildlife. Macrophytes are primary producers and are the basis of the food web for many organisms. They have a significant effect on soil chemistry and light levels as they slow down the flow of water and capture pollutants and trap sediments. Excess sediment will settle into the benthos aided by the reduction of flow rates caused by the presence of plant stems, leaves and roots. Some plants have the capability of absorbing pollutants into their tissue. Seaweeds are multicellular marine algae and, although their ecologic ...
