''Monkey Queen'' is a series of signed and unsigned screenprints by the graffiti artist Banksy, released in 2003. Description Banksy's ''Monkey Queen'' is an inflammatory portrait of Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth II. The monkey is pictured in the Crown jewels, Queen's jewels and her coiffed hair, in front of a Mod (subculture), mod-style target background. The work was released as a series of 150 signed and 600 unsigned screenprints. Banksy
Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based street artist, political activist, and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation. Active since the 1990s, his satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine black comedy, dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive Stencil graffiti, stenciling technique. His works of political and social commentary have appeared on streets, walls, and bridges throughout the world. His work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack. Banksy displays his art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Mod (subculture)
Mod, from the word ''modernist'', is a subculture that began in late 1950s London and spread throughout Great Britain, eventually influencing fashions and trends in other countries. It continues today on a smaller scale. Focused on music and fashion, the subculture has its roots in a small group of stylish London-based young men and women in the late 1950s who were termed ''modernists'' because they listened to modern jazz.
