Monique Akoa Makani (born 4 February 2001) is a Cameroonian professional basketball player for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) and for Tango Bourges Basket of the La Boulangère Wonderligue. Early life Akoa Makani was born on 4 February 2001, in Bafang, Cameroon. She grew up there before moving with her family to France at age nine. She grew up playing Association football, football before trying out basketball in school, afterwards joining the local club Basket Charpennes Croix-Luizet. She played there for a year before joining the club ASVEL Féminin. She was a member of the ASVEL training centre for nine years. Professional career France Akoa Makani was promoted to ASVEL's first-team towards the end of the 2018–19 season, appearing in four games while averaging 2.8 points and helping them win the Ligue Féminine de Basketball (LFB) title. The Phoenix Mercury are an American professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. The Mercury compete in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) as a member of the Western Conference. One of eight original franchises, it was founded before the league's inaugural 1997 season began. The team plays their home games at PHX Arena. The Mercury have qualified for the WNBA Playoffs in eighteen of its twenty-eight years in Phoenix. The 2025 Phoenix Mercury season is the 28th season for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women's National Basketball Association, and the second season under general manager, Nick U'Ren, and head coach, Nate Tibbetts. 2023 Women's AfroBasket
The 2023 AfroBasket Women was the 26th edition of the tournament and held from 28 July to 5 August 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda. Nigeria won their fourth consecutive and sixth overall title after defeating Senegal in the final. Host selection Rwanda was awarded the hosting rights on 25 May 2023. This was the first time Rwanda has hosted the event and the second time overall in any senior level having hosted the men's tournament in 2021. Format The 12 teams were split into four groups of three teams. The first-placed team qualified to the quarterfinals while the other two teams played in a playoff round. A second-placed team faced off against a third-placed team and vice versa. A knockout-system was used after the preliminary round and the losing teams of the quarterfinals were playing classification games while the winners played out the champion.
