Monica Chitupila
Monica Chitupila was a Mozambican independence activist and politician. In 1977 she was one of the first group of women elected to the People's Assembly. Biography Chitupila was originally from Niassa Province. She became involved in the independence struggle,R. The Assembly of the Republic () is the unicameral legislative body of the Mozambique, Republic of Mozambique, established in 1977. The current parliament has 250 members, who are directly elected through a system of party-list proportional representation and serve five-year terms. Parties must receive at least five percent of the vote nationally to gain parliamentary representation. Parliamentary debates and business are conducted entirely in Portuguese language, Portuguese. Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique, is a country located in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswatini and South Africa to the south and southwest. Niassa Province
Niassa is a province of Mozambique with an area of 129,056 km2 and a population of 1,810,794 (2017). It is the most sparsely populated province in the country. Lichinga is the capital of the province. There are a minimum estimated 450,000 Yao people living in Mozambique. They largely occupy the eastern and northern part of the Niassa province and form about 40% of the population of Lichinga, the capital of this province. The Ruvuma River forms much of the northern boundary of the province with Ruvuma Region, Tanzania, while Lake Niassa forms the western border of the province, separating it from Malawi. 75% of the province remains untouched by development, and remains free of landmines. Founded in 1962, FRELIMO began as a nationalist movement fighting for the self-determination and independence of Mozambique from Portuguese colonial rule. 1977 Mozambican General Election
General elections were held in Mozambique in 1977. They were the first elections after independence from Portugal, and FRELIMO was the sole legal party. Direct elections were only held for local and city councils, starting on 25 September. These councils then elected members of their local councils to the District Assemblies, which in turn elected representatives to the Provincial Assemblies. FRELIMO produced a single list of shortlisted candidates for the newly created 226-seat People's Assembly, the country's top legislative body.
