Monica de Sousa (Portuguese language, Portuguese: ''Mônica'') is a Brazilian fictional character and Mauricio de Sousa's best-known creation. Introduced in 1960, she serves as the main protagonist and title character of the ''Monica and Friends'' (''Turma da Mônica'') comic book series and media franchise. Mauricio based the character on his second daughter, also named Mônica Sousa, Monica, with whom the fictional character shares some physical characteristics. In her first appearances, she was a supporting character to Jimmy Five, but was gradually made the main character. An eponymous comic book series began publication from 1970. ''Monica and Friends'' (), previously published as ''Monica's Gang'' in Anglophone territories and as ''Frizz and Friends'' in London, is a Brazilian comic book series and media franchise created by Mauricio de Sousa. Mônica Spada e Sousa (Bauru, September 28, 1960) Pags: 67-92 is an entrepreneur, executive director of Mauricio de Sousa Produções (MSP) and inspiration of her father, Mauricio de Sousa, for the creation of the character Monica, of the Monica and Friends. Childhood Mônica Sousa was born in Bauru, daughter of designer and entrepreneur Mauricio de Sousa and Marilene Spada. She is the second daughter of the couple, who were also parents of Mariângela, Magali and Mauricio Spada, who died in 2016. In 1963, when she was two and a half years old, her father created the character for Folha de S. Maggy (original "Magali") is a character of the popular Brazilian comic book series ''Monica and Friends''. She was created by Mauricio de Sousa, who based the character on one of his daughters, Magali Spada e Souza. Monica, Mary Angela (Jimmy's sister) and Marina were also based on Mauricio's daughters. Maggy has her own comic book, in which there are also stories of her cat, Vanilla. She received her own comic book in 1989 and is being published uninterruptedly since then.
