Mongoose-V
The Mongoose-V 32-bit microprocessor for spacecraft onboard computer applications is a radiation hardening, radiation-hardened and expanded 10–15 megahertz, MHz version of the MIPS architecture, MIPS R3000 central processing unit, CPU. Mongoose-V was developed by Synova of Melbourne, Florida, Melbourne, Florida, United States, USA, with support from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The Mongoose-V processor first flew on NASA's Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite launched in November 2000 where it functioned as the main flight computer. A second Mongoose-V controlled the satellite's solid-state data recorder. The Mongoose-V requires 5 volts and is packaged into a 256-pin ceramic quad flatpack (CQFP). Space Technology 5
Space Technology 5 (ST5) of the NASA New Millennium program was a test of ten new technologies aboard a group of Microsatellite (spaceflight), microsatellites. Developed by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the three individual small spacecraft were launched together from the belly of a Lockheed L-1011 aboard the Pegasus (rocket), Pegasus XL rocket, on 22 March 2006. One technology involved antennas that were designed by computers using an evolutionary algorithm system developed at NASA Ames Research Center. The ST5 on-board flight computer, the C&DH (Command & Data Handling) system, was based on a Mongoose-V radiation hardening, radiation-hardened microprocessor. On 30 June 2006 the satellites making up ST5 were shut down after successfully completing their technology validation mission. R3000
The R3000 is a 32-bit RISC microprocessor chipset developed by MIPS Computer Systems that implemented the MIPS I instruction set architecture (ISA). Introduced in June 1988, it was the second MIPS implementation, succeeding the R2000 microprocessor, R2000 as the flagship MIPS microprocessor. It operated at 20, 25 and 33.33 MHz. The MIPS 1 instruction set is small compared to those of the contemporary 80x86 and 680x0 architectures, encoding only more commonly used operations and supporting few addressing modes. Combined with its fixed instruction length and only three different types of instruction formats, this simplified instruction decoding and processing. The Institute for Space and Defense Electronics (ISDE) is a research facility at Vanderbilt University, a private research university in Nashville, Tennessee. Faraday Cage
A Faraday cage or Faraday shield is an enclosure used to block some electromagnetic fields. A Faraday shield may be formed by a continuous covering of conductive material, or in the case of a Faraday cage, by a mesh of such materials. Faraday cages are named after scientist Michael Faraday, who first constructed one in 1836. Faraday cages work because an external electrical field will cause the electric charges within the cage's conducting material to be distributed in a way that cancels out the field's effect inside the cage.
