Monaro Shire was a local government area in the Monaro region of New South Wales, Australia. Monaro Shire was proclaimed on 7 March 1906. The Shire contained the villages of Bredbo and Nimmitabel. Monaro (New South Wales)
Monaro ( ), once frequently spelled "Manaro", or in early years of settlement "Maneroo" is a region in the south of New South Wales, Australia. A small area of Victoria near Snowy River National Park is geographically part of the Monaro. While the Australian Capital Territory is not considered part of the region, some towns in the Monaro have close links with Canberra. The Snowy Monaro Regional Council was established in 2016 which comprises the former Bombala, Cooma-Monaro and Snowy River Local Government Areas. The area was traditionally inhabited by Ngarigo, Walgalu, Bidawal and Southern Ngunnawal people. It boasts of snowfields, expansive timber forests and the Snowy River. Cooma
Cooma is a town in the south of New South Wales, Australia. It is located south of the national capital, Canberra, via the Monaro Highway. It is also on the Snowy Mountains Highway, connecting Bega with the Riverina. At the , Cooma had a population of 6,742. Cooma is the main town of the Monaro region. It is above sea level. The name could have derived from an Aboriginal word ''Coombah'', meaning 'big lake' or 'open country'. Cooma is south of the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, a main tributary of the Murray–Darling basin. Cooma sources its water from the river. Bredbo
Bredbo is a village on the Monaro plains of New South Wales, Australia. The village is on the Monaro Highway north of Cooma. The village is in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council and had a population of 352 at the . History Located at the junction of the Bredbo and Murrumbidgee rivers, the Bredbo area was historically prone to flooding. As a way-point on the road from Sydney to the Snowy Mountains, travellers were frequently stranded by rising water. By 1839 the Bredbo Inn had been established to accommodate travelers. The Inn was a Cobb and Co stagecoach post, with stables located behind the Inn which are still standing today. The surrounding settlement was developed to support squatters' runs established in the district between 1848 and 1850. Bredbo was officially proclaimed a village in 1888. Nimmitabel is a small town in the Monaro region in southeast New South Wales, Australia, in the Snowy Monaro Regional Council local government area. At the , Nimmitabel had a population of 320. Etymology Nimmitabel means "the place where many waters start or divide" in the local Aboriginal language. Local Government Areas Amalgamation Act 1980
The Local Government Areas Amalgamation Act 1980 (NSW) was an Act of the Parliament of New South Wales, which amended the ''Local Government Act 1919'', with the purpose of amalgamating a series of local government areas in New South Wales. The amalgamations took effect from 1 January 1981. The Act Schedule 1 of the Act lists the areas to be amalgamated and the status of the new area (i.e. Shire or Municipality). The only area to be split by the Act was the Manning Shire, divided between the Shire of Great Lakes and the newly created Municipality of Greater Taree. Cooma-Monaro Shire was a local government area located in the Monaro region of southern New South Wales, Australia. The area was named after the former Cooma Municipality and the former Monaro Shire, that were amalgamated to create it. The Municipality of Cooma was established in 1879, and the Monaro Shire was one of several shires established in 1906. The Monaro Shire and Cooma Municipal Council amalgamated in 1981. On 11 February 2004, Cooma-Monaro Shire absorbed a small part of the former Yarrowlumla Shire, near Michelago.
