The Monaghan Way () is a long-distance trail in County Monaghan, Ireland. It is long and begins in Inniskeen and ends at Lough Muckno outside Castleblaney. It is typically completed in one long day or two shorter days. County Monaghan ( ; ) is a Counties of Ireland, county in Ireland. It is in the Provinces of Ireland, province of Ulster and is part of Border Region, Border strategic planning area of the Northern and Western Region. It is named after the town of Monaghan. Monaghan County Council is the Local government in the Republic of Ireland, local authority for the county. The population of the county was 65,288, according to the 2022 census. The county has existed since 1585 when the Mac Mathghamhna rulers of Airgíalla agreed to join the Kingdom of Ireland. Inniskeen
Inniskeen, officially Inishkeen (), is a small village, townland and parish in County Monaghan, Ireland, close to the County Louth and County Armagh borders. The village is located about from Dundalk, from Carrickmacross, and from Crossmaglen. Seven townlands of this Roman Catholic Diocese of Clogher parish lie within County Louth. History This territory had been inhabited from the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. Rock art carvings ( Petroglyphs) have been discovered in adjoining townlands (including Drumirril) dating to 3000 BC. Cup and ring marks with concentric circles are the main inscriptions. They have been excavated by UCD School of Archaeology. Finds on the site ranged from late Neolithic to the early Christian period. These included ancient cooking places known as Fulachta Fiadh. A long-distance trail (or long-distance footpath, track, way, greenway) is a longer recreational trail mainly through rural areas used for hiking, backpacking, cycling, equestrianism or cross-country skiing. They exist on all continents except Antarctica. Many trails are marked on maps. Typically, a long-distance route will be at least long, but many run for several hundred miles, or longer. Many routes are waymarked and may cross public or private land and/or follow existing rights of way. Lough Muckno
Muckno Lake (), also known as Lough Muckno, is a freshwater lake in the northeast of Ireland. It is located in County Monaghan beside the town of Castleblayney. Long-distance Trails In The Republic Of Ireland
These are lists of long-distance trails in the Republic of Ireland, and include recognised and maintained walking trails, pilgrim trails, cycling greenways, boardwalk-mountain trails, and interconnected national and international trail systems. There are 43 National Waymarked Trails by the 'National Trails Office' of the Irish Sports Council. Each trail is trail blazing, waymarked with square black posts containing an image, in yellow, of a walking man and a directional arrow, a symbol reserved for use only by National Waymarked Trails. Castleblayney (; ) is a town in County Monaghan, Ireland. The town had a population of 3,926 as of the 2022 census. Castleblayney is near the border with County Armagh in Northern Ireland, and lies on the N2 road from Dublin to Derry and Letterkenny. Geography The town lies above the western shore of Lough Muckno, the largest lake in County Monaghan. The River Fane flows eastwards from the lake to the Irish Sea at Dundalk in County Louth. Irish North Western Railway (INW) was an Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland. Development The company was founded as the Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway (D&ER) and opened the first section of its line, from to , in 1849. In Dundalk the D&ER line crossed the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway main line, which was completed between and its own separate station in the same year. The D&ER extended westwards, reaching in 1854, in 1855 and in 1858. In 1859 the D&ER reached where it connected with the Londonderry and Enniskillen Railway (L&ER). The River Fane () is a river flowing from County Monaghan to Dundalk Bay in County Louth, Ireland. Course Originating in Lough Ross on the border of County Monaghan and County Armagh, and so of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the Fane flows east towards Dundalk Bay, straddling the border between counties Monaghan, Louth and Armagh and flowing through Inniskeen and Knockbridge, before meeting Dundalk Bay near Blackrock, County Louth.
