Monaco national rugby union team has been playing since the 1990s. They currently only play friendly games and do not compete in the European Nations Cup, but they are still member of World Rugby. In October 2019, Monaco ranked 101st out of 105 national teams according to World Rugby. History Before the founding of the Monegasque Rugby Federation, rugby in Monaco was predominantly represented by AS Monaco Rugby that was founded in 1964 and played in the French rugby union system. In 1996, following an invitation from the rugby unions in Switzerland, Andorra and Luxembourg to find other smaller rugby nations to play against, with AS Monaco as the basis, the Monegasque Rugby Federation was founded in 1996. The 2023 Rugby World Cup () was the tenth men's Rugby World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for national rugby union teams. It took place in France from 8 September to 28 October 2023 in nine venues across the country. The opening game and 2023 Rugby World Cup final, final took place at the Stade de France, north of Paris. The tournament was held in the bicentenary year of the purported invention of the sport by William Webb Ellis. The 1995 Rugby World Cup (), was the third Rugby World Cup. It was hosted and won by South Africa, and was the first Rugby World Cup in which every match was held in one country. The World Cup was the first major sporting event to take place in South Africa following the end of apartheid.
