Monaco City (french: Monaco-Ville) is the southcentral ward in the Principality of Monaco. Located on a headland that extends into the Mediterranean Sea, it is nicknamed The Rock (french: Le Rocher). The name "Monaco City" is misleading: it is not itself a city, but a historical and statistical district. It holds most of the country's political and judicial institutions: the Prince's Palace, the town hall, the government, the National Council (parliament of Monaco), the Municipal Council, the courts and a prison (hanging on The Rock). Fort Antoine Theatre
The Fort Antoine Theatre is a small amphitheatre on the Avenue de la Quarantaine in the Monaco-Ville ward of Monaco. The fort hosts open air plays in the summer months. The theatre was originally constructed as a fortress in the early 18th-century before its destruction in 1944. Prince Rainier III had the fortress rebuilt as a theatre in 1953. The parapet of the fort is provided by pittosporum hedges. The militaristic nature of its architecture has been retained with a bartizan and a pyramid of cannonballs at the centre of the theatre. St Martin Gardens
The Jardin St. Martin are located in the Monaco-Ville ward of Monaco. The gardens are made up of a series of paths on the south west face of the Rock of Monaco. They have an estimated area of 11,200 square meters (1.12 hectares). Flora include Aleppo pine trees and yellow agaves in its terraces with medieval fortifications also featuring in the gardens. Archaeological finds in the gardens have been dated to the Holocene era. François Cogné's bronze statue of Prince Albert I as a sailor stands at the centre of the gardens.
