Abdul Ahad Momand
Abdul Ahad Momand (; born 1959) is an Afghan-German and former Afghan Air Force aviator who became the first, and currently only, Afghan astronaut to journey to outer space. He became one of Soyuz TM-6 crew members and spent nine days aboard the Mir space station in 1988 as an Interkosmos research cosmonaut. Momand holds many records as an Afghan astronaut. He became the first person to take the Quran to space and recite it there. When he spoke to his mother on the phone from space, Pashto became the fourth language to be officially spoken in space. He became the first Afghan citizen and the fourth Muslim to visit outer space, after Sultan bin Salman Al Saud, Muhammed Faris, and Musa Manarov. Farida Momand
Farida Momand (born 14 January 1965) is an Afghan doctor and politician who serves as Minister of Higher Education. Early life and education Momand was born in 1965 in the Momand Dara District of Nangarhar Province. She is of Pashtun descent. She studied at Rabia Balkhi High School and received a BA in Medicine from Kabul University. Career Momand is a medical doctor and has worked in several government hospitals. She was a professor at Kabul Medical University. Her husband was a spokesman for the Northern Alliance which sought to keep the Taliban from power. When the Taliban took over Kabul in 1996, the family received death threats and fled to Pakistan. They returned in November 2001, when Kabul was liberated. Momand returned to the medical school and was appointed dean. She was also elected to represent female university students and employees. Mohammad Gul Khan Momand
Mohammad Gul Khan Momand (17 January 1885 – 18 August 1964), was both a literary figure and a politician in Afghanistan. He also served as an Army Officer during Afghanistan's Independence war in 1919. He served in numerous government and leadership positions, including Minister of Interior of Afghanistan. Early life and education Wazir Mohammad Gul Khan Momand was born in Andrabayo, Kabul Province to a Mohmand Pashtun family and his forefathers were originally from Nangarhar. His father was Khurshid Khan, while his grandfather was Momen Khan who served in the Afghan Army during the rule of King Abdur Rahman Khan. His great grandfather, Abdul Kareem, also served in the Afghan Army during the reign of King Dost Mohammad Khan. Qalandar Momand Qalandar Momand (Pashto: قلندر مومند; 1 September 1930 – 4 February 2003) was a celebrated Pakistani Pashto poet, short story writer, translator, journalist, linguist, and political activist. He was one of the foremost voices in modern Pashto literature and a dedicated advocate of democratic and progressive ideals, especially within the Pashtun cultural and political context. Early life and education Qalandar Momand was born on 1 September 1930 in Bazid Khel, a village near Peshawar, in what is now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
