Molloy or O'Molloy is an Irish surname, anglicised from Ó Maolmhuaidh, maolmhuadh meaning 'Proud Chieftain'. (See also Malloy.) They were part of the southern Uí Néill, the southern branch of the large tribal grouping claiming descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages, the fifth-century king who supposedly kidnapped St Patrick to Ireland. They held power over a large part of what is now County Offaly, where the surname is still very common. A second family were the O Maoil Aodha, 'descendant of the devotee of (St) Aodh', from maol, literally 'bald', a reference to the distinctive tonsure sported by early Irish monks. As well as Molloy, this surname has also been anglicised as Mulloy, Malloy, Maloy, 'Miley' and 'Millea'. The name arose in east Connacht, in the Roscommon/east Galway region, and remains numerous there today. Matt Molloy
Matt Molloy (born 12 January 1947) is an Irish musician, from a region known for producing talented flautists. As a child, he began playing the flute and won the All-Ireland Flute Championship at nineteen. Considered one of the most brilliant Irish musicians, his style that adapts piping techniques to the flute has influenced many contemporary Irish flute players. During the 1970s, Molloy was a member of The Bothy Band and its successor, the re-founded Planxty. He joined The Chieftains in 1979, replacing Michael Tubridy. Leonard Greenham Star Molloy
Major Leonard Greenham Star Molloy (1861–1937) was an Irish medical doctor and politician. Molloy was born in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland, the son of Richard Molloy of Rathgar, Dublin. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin where he obtained his M.A., M.D. and D.Ph. He was commissioned surgeon lieutenant in the Duke of Lancaster's Own Yeomanry in 1901, and was appointed a lieutenant when he resigned his commission as a surgeon in July 1902. During World War I he served in France and Headquarters (dispatches twice) and was 2nd in command of the 23rd Division. Major Molloy was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1917. He retired from the Army in 1921. He was an honorary Life Member of the St. John Ambulance Association and in 1921 was made a Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Leo John Molloy (born 1956) is a New Zealand businessman and former veterinarian. He has been a controversial and polarising figure for his outspoken views. Early life Molloy was born in the West Coast town of Moana. He is of Irish descent. Television producer Julie Christie is his sister. Captain John Molloy (5 September 1786 – 6 October 1867) was an early Irish settler in Western Australia. He was one of the original settlers of Augusta and an early settler of Busselton. Early life The outline of John Molloy's birth and early life are believed by some to be clear, though there is little detail and published accounts vary greatly. This is just one possible version that he was the same John Molloy who was baptised at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, on 8 October 1786, the son of William and Mary Molloy. Gerald Molloy
Gerald Molloy (born at Mount Tallant House, near Dublin, 10 September 1834; died at Aberdeen, 1 October 1906) was an Irish Roman Catholic priest, theologian and scientist. Life He was educated at Castleknock College, and subsequently went to Maynooth College. Here he applied himself to theology and the physical sciences. He was barely 23 when in 1857 he became professor of theology at Maynooth, and continued to hold that chair until 1874, when he accepted the professorship of natural philosophy at the Catholic University of Ireland. In 1883 he succeeded Dean Henry Neville of Cork as Rector of the Catholic University of Ireland, which office he occupied up to the day of his death. He acted on the commission on manual training in primary schools, and filled the post of assistant commissioner under the Educational Endowments Act.
