Mokri Yaly
The Mokri Yaly ( ukr, Мокрі Яли; russian: Мокрые Ялы) is a river in western Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. From its headwaters in Volnovakha, it flows roughly west and northwest to its confluence with the Vovcha river, which forms part of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast boundary. Etymology The name of the river roughly translates to 'wet shores', combining Ukrainian ''mokri'' 'wet' (plural) and Urum 'shore'. Compare the names of the small tributary Sukha Yala 'dry shore' (feminine singular) and the sister tributary of the Vovcha Sukhi Yaly 'dry shores'. The river was known as Elkuvaty in older chronicles. Geography The river is 147 km long. Beginning near Volnovakha in Donetsk Oblast, it flows northwards, through the town of Velyka Novosilka, where the Shaitanka and rivers join it, while smaller rivers like the Sukhа Yalа (or Balka Sukhi Yaly) and Kobylna join it elsewhere. Staromlynivka
Staromlynivka ( uk, Старомлинівка; russian: link=no, Старомлыновка, Staromlynovka) is a village in Volnovakha Raion (district) in Donetsk Oblast of eastern Ukraine, located south of the town of Velyka Novosilka. Before 1946, it was known as Staryi Kermenchyk ( uk, Старий Керменчик; russian: Старый Керменчик, Stary Kermenchik). It is located in the floodplain of the Mokri Yaly river. It is the administrative center of Staromlynivka rural hromada, one of the ''hromadas'' (communities) of Ukraine. History The village was founded as Staryi Kermenchyk in 1779 by Greeks from Crimea. The "Kermenchyk" part of the name comes from the word () from the Urum language, a Turkic language spoken by some Pontic Greeks. 2023 Ukrainian Counteroffensive
In early June 2023, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine launched a counteroffensive against Russian forces occupying its territory with a long-term goal of breaching the frontlines. Mius-Front
The Mius-Front was a heavily fortified German Nazi defensive line along the Mius River in the Donbas region of the Soviet Union and Ukraine during World War II. It was created by the Germans in October 1941, under direction of General Paul Ludwig Ewald von Kleist. By the summer of 1943, the Mius-Front consisted of three defense lines with a total depth of . Fortifications The main line of defense started off at Taganrog Bay on the coast of the Sea of Azov, to the east of the city Taganrog, then ran along the Mius River, which gave its name to the line. Urum Language
Urum is a Turkic language spoken by several thousand ethnic Greeks who inhabit a few villages in Georgia and southeastern Ukraine. Over the past few generations, there has been a deviation from teaching children Urum to the more common languages of the region, leaving a fairly limited number of new speakers. The Urum language is often considered a variant of Crimean Tatar. Name and etymology The name '' Urum'' is derived from ''Rûm'' ("Rome"), the term for the Byzantine Empire in the Muslim world. The Ottoman Empire used it to describe non-Muslims within the empire. The initial vowel in Urum is prosthetic. Turkic languages originally did not have in the word-initial position and so in borrowed words, it used to add a vowel before it.
