Mohawk Girls
''Mohawk Girls'' is a 2005 documentary film by Tracey Deer about the experiences of adolescent girls growing up on the Mohawk reserve of Kahnawake, across the Saint Lawrence River from Montreal, Quebec. Deer, who was born and raised in Kahnawake, focuses on three young women:Felicia, Amy and Lauren, a mixed race teen. The film received the Best Documentary prize at the ImagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival. It was produced by Rezolution Pictures and the National Film Board of Canada in association with broadcaster Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. The film also aired in Canada on CBC Newsworld's documentary series ''The Lens'' on February 20, 2007 and February 24, 2007. A documentary film or documentary is a non-fictional motion-picture intended to "document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record". ''Mohawk Girls'' is a comedy-drama series developed by Tracey Deer based on her 2005 documentary ''Mohawk Girls''. The program premiered on OMNI Television and on APTN in the fall of 2014 and entered its fourth season in 2016. It is available for streaming on CBC Gem and it was picked up by Peacock streaming service in 2021. Deer describes the series as "''Sex and the City'' for the Native set". Development and production At age 17, Tracey Deer had met Brittany LeBorgne and Heather White while working as their camp counsellor and told them that one day she would create a TV show for them to star in.
