Mohammad Tajul Islam
Mohammad Tajul Islam () is a Bangladeshi lawyer at the Bangladesh Supreme Court, currently serving as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, which was established to prosecute crimes against humanity committed during the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. He was appointed to this position on September 7, 2024, by the Ministry of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs. Before this role, he worked as a defense lawyer at the same tribunal. Career Tajul Islam was a defense lawyer of leaders of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami charged with war crimes at the International Crimes Tribunal, and had worked with Barrister Abdur Razzaq. He defended Jamat's Leader Abdul Quader Molla at the International Crimes Tribunal in 2013, who was sentenced to death. Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed (; 23 June 1948 – 22 November 2015) was a Bangladeshi politician and war criminal who served as a Member of Parliament and as the Minister of Social Welfare from 2001 to 2006. He was sentenced to death after trial in 2015 after accusations of war crimes which were allegedly committed during the Bangladesh War of Independence in 1971. He was accused of being second in command of Al-Badr paramilitary force in 1971, which committed war crimes at that time. On 17 July 2013, he was found guilty of genocide, of conspiracy in the mass killings of Bengali intellectuals, and of abduction, all during the 1971 War of Liberation, by the International Crimes Tribunal-2 and sentenced to death for two of the seven charges brought against him. International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh)
The International Crimes Tribunal (Bangladesh), abbreviated as, ICT (Bangladesh), is a domestic war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh set up in 2009 to investigate and prosecute suspects for the genocide committed in 1971 by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Shams during the Bangladesh Liberation War. During the 2008 general election, the Awami League (AL) pledged to try war criminals. The government set up the tribunal after the Awami League won the general election in December 2008 with a more than two-thirds majority in parliament. The War Crimes Fact Finding Committee, tasked to investigate and find evidence, completed its report in 2008, identifying 1,600 suspects.
