Mohammad Alvi
Mohammad Alvi (10 April 1927 29 January 2018; sometimes spelled Mohammed Alvi) was an Indian poet known for writing Urdu gazals, particularly a collection of Urdu gazals titled ''Chautha Aasmaan'' (4th sky) which became a subject of dispute between the Muslims scholars when he wrote a couplet titled "send a good prophet". He was later referred to as a "kafir" through a fatwa by the Imam of Jama Masjid in 1994, and he subsequently withdrew the line from his book after he was criticised by the Islamic theology school, Ahmedabad. The recipient of Sahitya Academy Award in 1992 for ''Chautha Aasmaan'' poetry and Ghalib Award by Ghalib Academy, he is believed to have significantly contributed to Urdu literature. His authorship includes eighty-six gazals, sixty-six nazms, some couplets and four books, including ''Khali Makaan'', a poetic book comprising gazals. Ghalib Academy () is an educational and cultural institution of national importance in India. It was founded in 1969 by Hakeem Abdul Hameed and inaugurated by the former president of India Zakir Husain, Dr. Zakir Hussain in Nizamuddin West area, Delhi. Rekhta is an Indian web portal started by Rekhta Foundation, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the Urdu literature. The Rekhta Library Project, its books preservation initiative, has successfully digitized approximately 200,000 books over a span of ten years. These books primarily consist of Urdu, Hindi and Persian literature and encompass a wide range of genres, including biographies of poets, Urdu poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The collection originates from public and research libraries in the Indian subcontinent. It serves content in multiple scripts such as Devanagari, Roman and, primarily, Nastaliq. Urdu Literature
Urdu literature (, ) comprises the literary works, written in the Urdu language. While it tends to be dominated by poetry, especially the verse forms of the ''ghazal'' () and '' nazm'' (), it has expanded into other styles of writing, including the short story, or ''afsana'' (). Urdu literature is popular mostly in Pakistan, where Urdu is the national language, and in India, where it is an Eighth Schedule language. Mirza Ghalib Award, commonly known as Ghalib Award, is a literary award and an honor in India presented annually in the month of December by Ghalib Academy (Ghalib Institute).
