Mohamed Mediène
General Mohamed Mediène (), also known as Toufik (توفيق) and Le Zouave is an Algerian intelligence officer who formerly served as head of the country's secret services, the Intelligence and Security Department (''Département du renseignement et de la sécurité'', DRS), from 1990 to 2015. He was described as the world's longest serving "intelligence chief". He was born in 1936 to a kabyle (Zouave) family from Guenzet (Sétif Province), but grew up near Algiers at Saint-Eugene ( Bologhine). He joined the National Liberation Army in 1961, a few months before Algeria's independence. He was an enlisted officer in the NLA. Kabyle People
The Kabyle people (, or ''Leqbayel'' or ''Iqbayliyen'', , ) are a Berbers, Berber ethnic group indigenous to Kabylia in the north of Algeria, spread across the Atlas Mountains, east of Algiers. They represent the largest Berber population of Algeria and the second largest in North Africa. In Amenas Hostage Crisis
The In Amenas hostage crisis began on 16 January 2013, when al-Qaeda-linked terrorists affiliated with a brigade led by Mokhtar Belmokhtar took expat hostages at the Tigantourine gas facility near In Amenas, Algeria. One of Belmokhtar's senior lieutenants, Abdul al Nigeri, led the attack and was among the terrorists killed. After four days, the Algerian special forces raided the site, in an effort to free the hostages. At least 39 foreign hostages were killed along with an Algerian security guard, although the true figure is not known, as were 29 terrorists. A total of 685 Algerian workers and 107 foreigners were freed. Three terrorists were captured. It was one of many attacks in the Maghreb carried out by Islamist groups since 2002. Ahmed Gaid Salah
Ahmed Gaid Salah (; 13 January 1940 – 23 December 2019) was an Algerian military officer and chief of staff of the Algerian People's National Army from 2004 to 2019. In 2004, he was appointed by then-President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to the position of chief of staff of the army. On 15 September 2013, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Defense.
