Mohamed Eunos Bin Abdullah
Mohamed Eunos bin Abdullah (1876 — 12 December 1933) was a pioneer of modern Malay journalism and leader of the Malay Singaporeans, Malay community of Singapore. He was the first Malay member of the Municipal Commission of Singapore and the Legislative Council of the Straits Settlements. He was also the founder of Malay Union, Kesatuan Melayu, a political organisation. Early life and education Eunos was born in either Singapore or Sumatra in 1876. His father was a Minangkabau people, Minangkabau merchant from Sumatra. After graduating from a Malay school in Kampong Glam, he attended Raffles Institution. Career After graduating from Raffles Institution between 1893 and 1894, he was employed as a harbour master attendant in Singapore. He later became a harbour master in Muar (town), Muar, Johor, where he remained for five years before returning to Singapore. Jawi Script
Jawi (; ; ; ) is a writing system used for writing several languages of Southeast Asia, such as Acehnese, Banjarese, Betawi, Magindanao, Malay, Mëranaw, Minangkabau, Tausūg, Ternate and many other languages in Southeast Asia. Jawi is based on the Arabic script, consisting of all 31 original Arabic letters, six letters constructed to fit phonemes native to Malay, and one additional phoneme used in foreign loanwords, but not found in Classical Arabic, which are ''ca'' ( ), ''nga'' ( ), ''pa'' ( ), ''ga'' ( ), ''va'' ( ), and ''nya'' ( ). Jawi was developed during the advent of Islam in Maritime Southeast Asia, supplanting the earlier Brahmic scripts used during Hindu-Buddhist era. Eunos MRT Station
Eunos MRT station is an elevated Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station on the East–West line in Geylang, Singapore. Operated by SMRT Trains, the station primarily serves the Eunos subzone of Geylang as well as the Eunos Bus Interchange. Plans for the station were first outlined in May 1982, and its construction was announced in October 1983 as part of Phase II of the MRT system. The contract for the station was awarded to a joint venture between Okumura Corporation and Oh Teck Thye. During construction, the joint venture was terminated when Oh Teck Thye was put under receivership, with Okumura taking over the project. The station opened on 4 November 1989. Platform screen doors were introduced in 2011, along with high volume low speed fans in 2013. The design of the station's roof took inspiration from traditional Minangkabau architecture. Jalan Eunos
Geylang East, as a planning subzone, covers what is more commonly known as Eunos, ( or ). This is located in Geylang zone in the Central Region of Singapore. The vicinity is served by both Paya Lebar and Eunos MRT stations. This area is distinct from the Geylang East Central and estate, which is adjacent to and west of Eunos. "Eunos" is also the name given to a street called which spans the area. Etymology and History The settlement was originally named Kampong Melayu, a large Malay village that used to include Kampong Ubi and Kaki Bukit areas. It was later renamed Eunos in honour of its founder, Mohamed Eunos bin Abdullah. Eunos was the Chairman and co-founder of the Singapore Malay Union and the first Malay representative of the Legislative Council, the then governing body of Singapore. Bidadari Cemetery
Bidadari Cemetery ( Malay: ''Perkuburan Bidadari'', lit. ''Cemetery of the Angels'', Chinese: 比达达利坟场) is a defunct cemetery in Singapore. It used to serve the Christian, Muslim, Hindu and Sinhalese communities, and accepted burials between 1907 and 1972. The site of Bidadari Cemetery used to be Istana Bidadari, the home of Che Puan Besar Zubaidah, who was the second wife of Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor. The cemetery accepted its last burial in 1972. By 2006, all known graves were exhumed to make way for development of the Bidadari Estate. Etymology The name "Bidadari" comes from the Malay word for "angel".
