Moe Angelos
Maureen "Moe" Angelos is an American theater artist, playwright, and performer known for her work in theater and her contributions to collaborative performance art. She is a member of the Obie Award-winning theatre company The Builders Association and a co-founder of the Obie Award-winning company, The Five Lesbian Brothers. Early career and WOW Café Theater Angelos began her theater career in the early 1980s, joining the WOW Café Theatre in 1981. WOW Café is a feminist theater collective in New York City known for fostering avant-garde and experimental performances. Angelos continues to be an active member of the WOW community. Obie Award
The Obie Awards or Off-Broadway Theater Awards are annual awards given since 1956 by ''The Village Voice'' newspaper to theater artists and groups involved in off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway productions in New York City. Starting just after the 2014 ceremony, the American Theatre Wing became the joint presenter and administrative manager of the Obie Awards. The Obie Awards are considered off-Broadway's highest honor, similar to the Tony Awards for Broadway productions. Background The Obie Awards were initiated by critic Jerry Tallmer and Edwin (Ed) Fancher, publisher of ''The Village Voice,'' who handled the financing and business side of the project. They were first given in 1956 under the direction of Tallmer. Initially, only off-Broadway productions were eligible; in 1964, off-off-Broadway productions were made eligible. The Builders Association
Marianne Weems is the artistic director of the New York-based Obie Award-winning performance and media company, The Builders Association, founded in 1994. She is a director of theater and opera and a professor at UC Santa Cruz. Early life and early career Weems was born in Washington (state), Washington state and grew up in Seattle. She attended Reed College before graduating from Barnard College. In 1986–87 she attended Whitney Museum of American Art's Independent Study Program where she founded the performance and study group The V-Girls along with Martha Baer, Erin Cramer, Jessica Chalmers and Andrea Fraser. From 1988 to 1993 she was dramaturg and assistant director with The Wooster Group and during that time also worked with Susan Sontag, Ron Vawter, Richard Foreman and many others.
