Moacir Santos
Moacir Santos (26 July 1926 – 6 August 2006) was a Brazilian composer, multi-instrumentalist and music educator. Musicians such as Baden Powell, Bola Sete and Wilson das Neves studied under him. As a composer, Santos worked with Nara Leão, Roberto Menescal, Sérgio Mendes and Lynda Laurence, among others. His music was highly respected by musicians in Brazil and the United States, despite never achieving wider recognition. Mark Levine, Anat Cohen, and Muiza Adnet have all released albums consisting entirely of Santos' music. Life and career Moacir Santos was born in Flores do Pajeú, Pernambuco in 1926. His mother died when he was two years old, and as his father had already left the family, he was taken in by another family. Roberto Menescal
Roberto Menescal (born October 25, 1937) is a Brazilian composer, record producer, guitarist, vocalist, and pioneer of bossa nova. In many of his songs there are references to the sea, including his best-known composition "O Barquinho" ("Little Boat"). He is also known for work with Carlos Lyra, Nara Leão, Wanda Sá, Ale Vanzella, and many others. Menescal has performed in Latin music genres such as Música popular brasileira (Brazilian pop), bossa nova, and samba. ''Coisas'' is an album by Brazilian composer Moacir Santos recorded in 1965 and released on the Forma record label. The album was listed by Ben Ratliff in his 100 most important recordings and by Rolling Stone in their 100 Greatest Brazilian Music Records. Reception Although the album was not met with acclaim when first released, it has gone on to receive praise. ''The New York Times'' described the album as "one of the great accomplishments of modern Brazilian music". Writing for the ''Village Voice,'' Larry Blumenfeld called the album a "brilliant record". Ben Ratliff wrote that the album sounds like it was a mixture of West Coast jazz and samba and the arrangements on Blue Note recordings. Carlos Eduardo Lyra Barbosa (11 May 1933 – 16 December 2023) was a Brazilian singer, and composer of numerous bossa nova and Música popular brasileira classics. Hans-Joachim Koellreutter
Hans-Joachim Koellreutter (2 September 1915 – 13 September 2005) was a Brazilian composer, teacher and musicologist. Koellreutter was born in Freiburg, Germany and lived in Brazil from 1937 onward, where he became one of the country's most influential musicians. In Brazil Koellreuter taught many prominent composers, including Gilberto Mendes, Cláudio Santoro, Antônio Carlos Jobim, Denis Mandarino, Jayme Amatnecks, among others. He brought the theory of atonal music to Brazil, creating the group ''"Musica Viva"'' and inflating the debate between the "Nationalists" and "Serialists". Big Band
A big band or jazz orchestra is a type of musical ensemble of jazz music that usually consists of ten or more musicians with four sections: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section. Big bands originated during the early 1910s and dominated jazz in the early 1940s when swing music, swing was most popular. The term "big band" is also used to describe a genre of music, although this was not the only style of music played by big bands. Big bands started as accompaniment for dancing the Lindy Hop. Anat Cohen
Anat Cohen (; ; born 1975) is a New York City-based jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, and bandleader from Tel Aviv, Israel. Biography Cohen was born into a musical family and began playing the clarinet at age 12 with Jaffa Conservatory’s Dixieland band. When she was 16, she started playing tenor saxophone with the conservatory’s big band. She attended the Yellin School in 1991 and majored in jazz. She served in the Israeli military from 1993 to 1995 and studied at Berklee College of Music from 1996 to 1999. She then moved to New York and toured with the Diva Jazz Orchestra for a decade while also working with Brazilian groups such as the Choro Ensemble and Duduka Da Fonseca’s Samba Jazz Quintet.
