Mizusawa City
was a city located in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. Mizusawa is home to one of the six International Latitude Observatories. The observatories were close to the parallel of 39 degrees 8 minutes north latitude. They worked together to study the Earth's "wobble" using stars selected by Dr. Kimura, the astronomer in charge of the Mizusawa station. Twelve groups of stars that had six pairs of stars each were chosen. Two groups of stars were observed at each station following a schedule of dates, time, and duration prepared by Kimura. As of February 2006, the city had an estimated population of 60,239 and a population density of 621.53 persons per km2. The total area was 96.92 km2. Iwate Prefecture
is a Prefectures of Japan, prefecture of Japan located in the Tōhoku region of Honshu. Hisashi Kimura
was a Japanese astronomer originally from Kanazawa, Ishikawa. He devoted his career to the study and measurement of variation in latitude, building upon the work of Seth Carlo Chandler, who discovered the Chandler wobble. In 1899, he became the first director of the International Latitude Observatory at Mizusawa, Japan. He won the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1936. He was one of the first people to be awarded the Order of Culture when it was established in 1937. The crater Kimura on the Moon is named after him, the same for the asteroid 6233 Kimura. is a Japanese professional baseball designated hitter and pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball (MLB). was a village located in Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. The village of Koromogawa was created on April 1, 1889, with the establishment of the municipalities system. Maesawa, Iwate
was a town located in Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. Maesawa is well known for its “Maesawa beef”. Maesawa town was created on April 1, 1889, with the establishment of the municipalities system. On April 1, 1955, Maesawa annexed the neighboring villages of Kojo, Shirayama, and a portion of the village of Seibo. Isawa, Iwate
was a town located in Isawa District, Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū. Isawa is well known for its capsicum (green pepper). The name of the area is derived from the ancient Isawa tribe of Emishi who had put up fierce resistance to the Yamato court and its imperial aspirations. Isawa village proper was created on April 1, 1955 through the merger of the villages of Oyama, Natsuta and Wakayanagi. It was raised to town status on April 1, 1967. was a List of cities in Japan, city located in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. It is currently part of the city of Ōshū, Iwate, Ōshū. Esashi village was created within Esashi District on April 1, 1899 with the establishment of the municipalities system. On February 10, 1955, it annexed the neighboring town of Iwayado and the villages of Inase, Atago, Tahara, Hirose, Sunagawa, Tamasato, Fujisato, Yonesato and Ide to form Esashi town.
