Barbara Mittler (born 15 February 1968 in Hagen, West Germany) is a German sinologist. She is Co-director of the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context". Early life and education Barbara Mittler was born 15 February 1968, in Hagen, West Germany. She is the daughter of flautist Uta Mittler and librarian Elmar Mittler. Mittler received her B.A. and M.A. from Oxford and her Ph.D. from Heidelberg University. She also studied Chinese at the Mandarin Training Center in Taiwan. Career and research After her dissertation in 1994, Mittler worked as an assistant professor at Heidelberg University, where she was habilitated in 1998. She continued as an associate professor. In 2004, she became full professor at the Institute of Chinese Studies, which she managed as director until autumn 2012. Franz Mittler (April 14, 1893 in Vienna – December 28, 1970 in Munich) was an Austrian (and later on an American) composer, musician, and humorist. Life and work Mittler was born in Vienna. His maternal grandmother financed his earliest musical education which started out under Mr. Deutsch and later Oscar Stock (violin). His first public performance took place in 1902 when he performed the Schubert Sonatina in D D. 384 with the then 7-year-old Clara Haskil. In 1904 he moved from the violin to the pursuit of piano where his teacher became Theodor Leschetizky. He studied theory with Joseph Labor (also teacher of Julius Bittner and Arnold Schoenberg), later composition with Richard Heuberger and Karl Prohaska. From these teachers, Mittler attained his neo-Brahmsian style. Further studies included Fritz Steinbach and Carl Friedberg at the Vienna University and the Conservatory in Cologne. Leo Mittler (18 December 1893 – 16 May 1958) was an Austrian playwright, screenwriter and film director. Mittler was born in Vienna, then the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, to a Jewish family. He attended the University of Music and Performing Arts and worked as a playwright and director in the German theatre. Mittler then switched to work in the booming German film industry during the silent era. Mittler's best known film as director was '' Beyond the Street'' (1929), a "street film" influenced by Soviet cinema.Prawer p.89 As well as his work in the German industry, Mittler also spent time at the American company Paramount's French language-subsidiary based at the Joinville Studios in Paris.
