Mit Scapus
Maria Scheepers van Dommelen (17 November 1892 - 1989) was a Belgian pianist who arranged works and premiered several concerti for the Hans piano. She also performed with the Belgian Vocal Trio and arranged music for it. She used the pseudonym Mit Scapus. Scheepers was born in Antwerp and lived there her entire life. She studied at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp with August De Boeck. As a concert pianist, she presented many concerts with pianist Flore Levine-Cousyns. She performed with the Belgian Vocal Trio with Roitel and Tolkowsky, and arranged over 60 songs for the trio. She also served as president of the ''Concerts de Midi d'Anvers''. In 1926, Pierre Hans commissioned August De Boeck to compose a concerto for the Hans piano. Hans was an engineer with very thick fingers, who had asked the French firm Pleyel to build a piano he designed with an upper keyboard and a lower keyboard tuned a half tone apart. August De Boeck
Julianus Marie August De Boeck (May 9, 1865 in Merchtem, Belgium – October 9, 1937 in Merchtem) was a Flemish composer, organist and music pedagogue. He was the son of organist and director Florentinus (Flor) De Boeck (1826-1892) Career From 1880 he studied organ at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels under Alphonse Mailly, whose assistant he became until 1902. In 1889 he met the young Paul Gilson who became a close friend and, despite being the same age, his teacher for orchestration. Gilson encouraged De Boeck's composition work. He became an organist at various churches in Belgian villages (1892-1894 in Merchtem, 1894-1920 in Elsene). His academic career continued in 1907 as professor of harmony at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (1909–1920) and the Brussels Conservatory, and as director of the Conservatory of Mechelen (1921–1930). Flore Levine-Cousyns
Flore Levine-Cousyns was born in Antwerp in Belgium on December 6, 1898 and died in Antwerp on April 14, 1989. She was a concert pianist, Professor of Piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp (1931-1964) and was appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Couronne and Chevalier de l’Ordre de Léopold. She herself was a disciple of Émile Bosquet.note: Bosquet was born in Brussels in 1878 and died in Brussels in 1958, a virtuoso pianist of international reputation, who studied with Ferruccio Busoni. Émile Bosquet was one of the first pianists to obtain the First Prize of the worlds’ famous Anton Rubinstein Competition in Vienna in 1900. Pleyel Et Cie
Pleyel et Cie. ("Pleyel and Company") was a French piano manufacturing firm founded by the composer Ignace Pleyel in 1807. In 1815, Pleyel's son Camille joined him as a business partner. The firm provided pianos to Frédéric Chopin, who considered Pleyel pianos to be "non plus ultra". Pleyel et Cie. also operated a concert hall, the Salle Pleyel, where Chopin performed his first – and last – Paris concerts. Pleyel's major contribution to piano development was the first use of a metal frame in a piano. The Letterenhuis ("House of Literature") is a Belgian non-profit organization located in Antwerp. The Letterenhuis collects and archives information of Flemish writers and artists, and portraits concerning Flemish culture as from 1750. The ''Letterenhuis'' fulfills two tasks: on the one hand it is an archiving and documentation centre and on the other hand it is a museum. The most interesting part of its collection are the manuscripts of famous Belgian authors like Hendrik Conscience, Willem Elsschot and the contemporary writer Tom Lanoye.
