Missouri Digital Heritage Initiative
{{use mdy dates, date=October 2021 The Missouri Digital Heritage Initiative is a collaborative effort that expands the amount of information available online about Missouri's past. In 2007, Secretary of State Robin Carnahan proposed this landmark initiative to further Missourians’ access to information about the history of Missouri and local communities. Through the Missouri Digital Heritage Initiative, the Missouri State Archives and the Missouri State Library, in partnership with the State Historical Society of Missouri, are assisting institutions across the state in digitizing their records and placing them online for easy access. The Missouri Digital Heritage Initiative also offers classroom curricula based on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's standards to enable students and others to understand their heritage through the use of primary materials. Robin Carnahan
Robin Colleen Carnahan (born August 4, 1961) is an American businesswoman, lawyer, and politician, who previously served as the Missouri Secretary of State and served as the General Services Administration, Administrator of General Services in the Presidency of Joe Biden, Biden administration from 2021 to 2025. She is the daughter of Missouri politicians Mel Carnahan, Mel and Jean Carnahan. In 2010, she was the Democratic nominee in the 2010 United States Senate election in Missouri, U.S. Senate election in Missouri to replace retiring Republican Senator Kit Bond but lost to Roy Blunt. Missouri State Library
The Missouri State Library (MSL) is the official State Library of Missouri located in Jefferson City, Missouri. MSL provides library and reference services directly to the executive and legislative branches of the state's government. They support libraries in Missouri with resource sharing and continuing education programs as well as oversee state certification for public libraries. They also oversee Missouri Digital Heritage with the Missouri State Archives. They publish the Missouri Public Library Standards, maintain a directory of all the libraries in the state, the Wolfner News, and an e-newsletter called the ''Show Me Express''. They also create reference guides for other state agencies in Missouri. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) is an independent agency of the United States federal government established in 1996. John Robert "Jay" Ashcroft (born July 12, 1973) is an American attorney and politician who served as the 40th Secretary of State of Missouri from 2017 to 2025. History Of Missouri
The history of Missouri begins with settlement of the region by indigenous people during the Paleo-Indian period beginning in about 12,000 BC. Subsequent periods of native life emerged until the 17th century. New France set up small settlements, and in 1803, Napoleonic France sold the area to the U.S. as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Statehood for Missouri came following the Missouri Compromise in 1820 that allowed slavery. Settlement was rapid after 1820, aided by a network of rivers navigable by steamboats, centered in the City of St. Louis. It attracted European immigrants, especially Germans; the business community had a large Yankee element as well. The Civil War saw numerous small battles and control by the Union. After the war, its economy diversified, and railroads centered in Kansas City, opened up new farmlands in the west.
