Miss Ellie (dog)
Miss Ellie (c. 1993 – June 1, 2010), a blind American Chinese Crested hairless dog, was the 2009 winner in the pedigree section of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest. She appeared in shows at the Comedy Barn in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and was featured on the Animal Planet cable show ''Dogs 101''. Dawn Goehring rescued Miss Ellie at seven years old. Miss Ellie died on June 1, 2010, at age 17. Chinese Crested Dog
The Chinese Crested Dog is a hairless breed of dog. Like most hairless dog breeds, the Chinese Crested Dog comes in three varieties, with hair, without hair and a combination of the two, which can be born in the same litter: the Powderpuff, the Hairless and the Hairy-Hairless. Description The Chinese Crested is considered a small breed, weighing on average . At first look, the Hairless and Powderpuff varieties of Chinese Crested Dogs appear to be two different breeds, but hairlessness is an incomplete dominant trait within a single breed. The Hairless has soft, humanlike skin, as well as tufts of hair on its paws ("socks") and tail ("plume") and long, flowing hair on its head ("crest"). In addition to being an incomplete dominant gene, the "hairless" gene has a prenatal lethal effect when homozygous. A hairless dog is a dog with a genetic disposition for hairlessness and hair loss. There are two known types of genetic hairlessness, a dominant and a recessive type. World's Ugliest Dog Contest
The World's Ugliest Dog Contest is an annual contest held in Petaluma, California, as part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair, to decide which of the dogs entered in the contest is the ugliest. The contest, along with the rest of the fair, is typically scheduled for the fourth week of June. Along with the title of “The World’s Ugliest Dog” the winner’s owner receives a check for $1,000 and a trophy As of 2017, the prize has been increased to $1,600, a trophy and a free trip to New York City. There is significant media coverage, and as many as 20,000–30,000 people attend the contest during the fair each year. Sam (November 7, 1990 – November 18, 2005) was a blind pure-bred Chinese Crested dog, and three-time champion of the annual Sonoma-Marin Fair World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Northern California in 2003–2005.
