Miss America 2008
Miss America 2008, the 81st Miss America pageant, was held on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, on Saturday, January 26, 2008. The pageant was broadcast live on TLC from the Theatre for the Performing Arts at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, only the third time that the pageant had been held outside Atlantic City. Kirsten Haglund (Michigan) was crowned Miss America 2008 by Miss America 2007, Lauren Nelson. Selection of contestants One delegate from each state was chosen in state pageants held in mid-2007. Prior to competing in state pageants, the majority of delegates first were required to win a local title. Each delegate's title was pre-dated to 2007; for example, Jamie Langley was "Miss Alabama 2007" rather than "Miss Alabama 2008." Many contestants competed in state pageants in both the Miss America and Miss USA systems numerous times before they won titles. Mark Steines
Mark Anthony Steines (born June 7, 1964) is an American broadcast journalist and actor who was host of the syndicated gossip and entertainment round-up program ''Entertainment Tonight'' from 2004 to 2012, joining the program on August 24, 1995. He left the show on July 27, 2012. From 2012 to 2018, he co-hosted Hallmark Channel's '' Home and Family''. Personal life Steines was born in Dubuque, Iowa, one of two sons. He graduated from Hempstead High School in Dubuque, Iowa. He then went to the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on a football scholarship, graduating with a B.A. in radio and television. Miss California
The Miss California competition selects the representative for the state of California in the Miss America competition. The pageant began in Santa Cruz in 1924 and was held there in 1925. During the years 1926 through 1946 in years when the Miss California pageant was held, the competition was primarily in San Francisco and Venice, California. In 1947, it returned to Santa Cruz and was held there annually until 1985, after which it moved to San Diego in response to years of protests and a "Myth California" counter pageant organized by local feminist activists led by Ann Simonton and Nikki Craft. Miss North Carolina
The Miss North Carolina competition selects the representative for the state of North Carolina to compete in the annual Miss America competition. The competition has been held in Raleigh every year since 1978. Prior to that, it was held in various locales including Charlotte, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Durham, Burlington, Wilmington, and Morehead City. Miss Virginia
The Miss Virginia competition is a scholarship pageant for women, with the titleholder representing Virginia in the Miss America pageant. The competition was founded in 1953 as a scholarship contest for young women, although women had represented Virginia in the Miss America pageant since the 1930s. Four Miss Virginia winners have gone on to be crowned Miss America, including former national titleholder Caressa Cameron. To compete in the Miss Virginia pageant, a contestant must first win one of many local competitions. Elyse Umemoto
Elyse Umemoto (born May 10, 1984), is an American dance team manager and former Miss Washington in the Miss America circuit. She is known for finishing third place at Miss America 2008, and for competing on the reality competition show ''Survivor'', following her stint as Miss Washington. Early life Umemoto grew up in Wapato, Washington, with her three younger sisters and her parents, Gary and Luana. She attended Wapato High School, where played soccer and tennis, and performed as a cheerleader. She graduated in 2001. The Miss Washington competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Washington in the Miss America pageant. Regan Gallo of Pierce County was crowned Miss Washington 2022 on July 2, 2022, at Highline Performing Arts Center in Burien, Washington. The Miss Indiana competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the state of Indiana in the Miss America Pageant. Elizabeth Hallal of Georgetown was crowned Miss Indiana 2022 on June 18, 2022 at STAR Bank Performing Arts Center in Zionsville. Robin Michelle Meade (born April 21, 1969) is a former American television news correspondent. She was the lead news anchor for HLN's morning show '' Morning Express with Robin Meade''.
