Miramar, Florida
Miramar is a city in southern Broward County, Florida, United States. It is a suburb of the Miami metropolitan area. As of the 2020 census, the population was 134,721, making it the fourth-largest city in Broward County, the sixth-largest city in the Miami metro area, and the 14th-largest city in Florida. History Miramar was founded by A.L. Mailman to serve as a "bedroom community" for nearby Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Mailman bought the original property he was to develop from H.D. Perry Sr. in 1953. He built 56 homes on the property that were inexpensive homes of concrete and flat roofs. These homes sold quickly because of the low cost of both the homes and the land, and the city of Miramar came into being. The city was incorporated on May 26, 1955, and was named for the Miramar area of Havana, Cuba where Mailman had a summer home (Miramar translates to "look at the sea" in Spanish). Miramar is a French Neoclassical-style mansion on bordering Bellevue Avenue on Aquidneck Island in Newport, Rhode Island. Overlooking Rhode Island Sound, it was intended as a summer home for the George D. Widener family of Philadelphia. History Miramar was designed by Horace Trumbauer, who had earlier designed the nearby Edward Julius Berwind property, The Elms. The gardens were created by Jacques Gréber. The building and landscaping were still being designed when George Widener and his son Harry died aboard the . His widow, Eleanor Elkins Widener, survived the sinking; construction continued in 1913 and 1914 and Eleanor Widener hosted a large reception there on August 20, 1915. The 27-bedroom, 14-bath mansion has a grand salon and ballroom, 27 feet by 63 feet, on the first floor, which opens onto a oceanfront terrace. Miramar is a town in San Justo Department, located in Córdoba Province (Argentina). Overview Established on November 18, 1924, with the inauguration by Victorio Rosso of the Hotel Miramar, a health resort, Miramar was the site of a number of mineral spas from its early days, and in 1933, a jitney service was started between the town and the provincial capital, Córdoba. The relocation to Miramar of Máximo Palkhe, a businessman from Avellaneda (a suburb of Buenos Aires), in 1936, was followed by his decision to have a luxury hotel built on the shores of Mar Chiquita, a saline lake, in 1940. The decision led to the development of other tourist facilities in the hamlet, and Palkhe's Gran Hotel Vienna (named for his wife's birthplace), was inaugurated in 1945. Mira Mar is a northeastern suburb of the City of Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. Mira Mar was gazetted as a suburb in 1979. Geography Mira Mar is bounded by North and Collingwood Roads to the north, Drew Street to the east, Symers Street to the west and Middleton Road to the south. The suburb has a population of 1,682 persons, up from 1,539 at the 2006 election. Strawberry Hill (62 m) and Craggy Bluff dominate the local landscape. Te Motu Kairangi / Miramar Peninsula is a large peninsula on the southeastern side of the city of Wellington, New Zealand. It is located at the entrance to Wellington Harbour, in Wellington's eastern suburbs. According to Māori legend, it was formed at the same time that the taniwha Whaitaitai beached at nearby Hataitai as he tried to escape the confines of the harbour. It contains the large suburbs of Miramar, Maupuia, Seatoun and Strathmore Park and several smaller suburbs. Miramar is a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand, south-east of the city centre. It is on the Miramar Peninsula, directly east of the isthmus of Rongotai, the site of Wellington International Airport. History Miramar Peninsula was originally an island, separated from Kilbirnie by a sea channel called Te Awa-a-Taia (the channel of Taia); this was where the Rongotai isthmus is now. The original Māori name for the whole area when it was still an island was Te Motu Kairangi (meaning "esteemed" or "precious" island). 'Miramar' means 'sea view' in Spanish.
