Minxin Film Company (), also known as China Sun Motion Picture Company Ltd. (1923–1930), was one of the earliest movie studios in the history of Chinese cinema and Hong Kong cinema. History Minxin was founded in 1922 by Lai Manwai. Because Lai believed that cinema in China should serve the country's revolution and modernization, Minxin's early productions focused on documentaries dealing with educational, current affairs, and cultural topics. Lai Man-Wai
Lai Man-wai (; September 25, 1893 – October 26, 1953), also romanised as Lay Min-wei or M.W. Ray, considered the "Father of Hong Kong Cinema", was the director of the first Hong Kong film '' Zhuangzi Tests His Wife'' in 1913. In the film, Lai played the role of the wife, partly due to the reluctance of women to participate in show business at the time. Born in Yokohama, Japan, of Xinhui, Guangdong origin and raised in Hong Kong, he joined Sun Yat-sen's Kuomintang party in 1911 and helped make anti-warlord movies. The United Photoplay Service Company () was one of the three dominant production companies based in Shanghai, China during the 1930s, the other two being the Mingxing Film Company and the Tianyi Film Company, the forerunner of the Hong Kong–based Shaw Brothers Studio. The Mingxing Film Company ( zh, c=明星影片公司, p=Míngxīng Yǐngpiàn Gōngsī), also credited as the Star Motion Picture Production Company, was a production company active in the Republic of China (1912–1949), Republic of China between 1922 and 1937. Established by a consortium of creative professionals, including film director Zhang Shichuan, dramatist Zheng Zhengqiu, and critic Zhou Jianyun, Mingxing initially produced comedy films that drew little audience attention. Facing insolvency in 1923, the company used the last of its capital to produce ''Orphan Rescues Grandfather'', which released to massive commercial success and provided the company with the revenue needed to expand and hire new talent. ''Mulan Joins the Army'' () is a 1928 Chinese film directed by Hou Yao for the China Sun Motion Picture Company. China Sun invested 30,000 yuan to send a 20-member crew to Northern China to make use of four hundred soldiers during filming. Unfortunately for China Sun, the film was beaten to release in 1927 by competitor Tianyi Film Company's ''Hua Mulan Joins the Army'' (''Hua Mulan Congjun''), which was directed by Li Pingqian and starred Hu Shan, the younger sister of the famed Hu Die.
