Minuscule 543 is a Greek minuscule manuscript of the New Testament, written on parchment. It is designated by the siglum 543 in the Gregory-Aland numbering of New Testament manuscripts, ε 257 in von Soden's numbering of New Testament manuscripts, and labelled as 556 by biblical scholar and textual critic F. H. A. Scrivener. Using the study of comparative handwriting styles (palaeography) it has been assigned to the 12th century. The manuscript contains the text of the four Gospels, with some gaps and some unusual grammar forms and numerous errors. The manuscript is housed at the University of Michigan. Stichometry is the practice of counting lines in texts: Ancient Greeks and Romans measured the length of their books in lines, just as modern books are measured in pages. This practice was rediscovered by German and French scholars in the 19th century. ''Stichos'' (Plural, pl. ''stichoi'') is the Greek word for a 'line' of prose or poetry and the suffix '-metry' is derived from the Greek word for measurement. Eusebian canons, Eusebian sections or Eusebian apparatus, also known as Ammonian sections, are the system of dividing the four Gospels used between late antiquity and the Middle Ages. The divisions into Chapters and verses of the Bible, chapters and verses used in modern texts date only from the 13th and 16th centuries, respectively. It has marginalia. Description The codex contains an almost complete text of the four Gospels on 272 thick parchment leaves (size ), with only one small lacuna (John 21:17-25). The leaves are arranged in quarto. The text is written in two columns per page, in 23 lines per page, in dark-brown ink, capital letters in gold.
