Minou Tavárez Mirabal
Minerva Josefina Tavárez Mirabal (born 31 August 1956), known as Minou, is a philologist, professor and politician from the Dominican Republic. Tavárez served as deputy for the National District in the lower House for three terms from 2002 until 2016; she served as deputy minister of foreign affairs from 1996 to 2000. She was the presidential nominee of both the Alliance for Democracy and Democratic Choice parties for the 2016 Dominican Republic general election. From 2002 until 2016 she held several directive positions at Parliamentarians for Global Action. She presided the International Council from 2012 until 2014, and until 2016 she was President of the Executive Board. Since 2019, she is the vice president of the Party Alianza País. She is the co-founder and director of the Memory Museum Mirabal Sisters. She is a member of the Leaders Network of Michelle Bachelet's Foundation Horizonte Ciudadano. Distrito Nacional
The Distrito Nacional (; D.N.) is a subdivision of the Dominican Republic enclosing the capital Santo Domingo. It is not in any of the provinces, but in practice, it acts as a province on its own. Before October 16, 2001, the Distrito Nacional was much larger, including what is now known as Santo Domingo Province. Published statistics and maps generally show the former, larger, Distrito Nacional. The Distrito Nacional has no rural or underdeveloped areas. Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) is a non-profit, non-partisan international network of committed legislators, that informs and mobilizes parliamentarians in all regions of the world to advocate for human rights and the rule of law, democracy, human security, non-discrimination, gender equality, and climate justice. Mirabal Sisters
The Mirabal sisters ( ) were four sisters from the Dominican Republic, three of whom (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo () and were involved in activities against his regime. The three sisters were assassinated on 25 November 1960. The last sister, Adela (known as Dedé), who was not involved in political activities at the time, died of natural causes on 1 February 2014. Of the sisters, Minerva was the one who had the most active role in politics. She and her husband founded the 14 June Revolutionary Movement. Maria Teresa also became involved in the Movement. The oldest sister, Patria, did not have the same level of political activity as her other sisters, but she supported them. She lent her house to store weapons and tools from the insurgents.
