Ministry Of Justice And Constitutional Affairs (Malawi)
The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) of Malawi provides legal advice and services to the government's ministries and departments, as well as the general public. The Ministry represents the government in civil litigation cases and prosecute criminal cases on behalf of the State, drafts legislation, and vets agreements and treaties on behalf of the government. The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs contains the following departments: * The Attorney General’s Chambers * Solicitor General's Chambers * Directorate of Public Prosecutions * Department of Registrar General * Department of Administrator General The ministry follows the direction of the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and is under the supervision of the Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice. Orton Chirwa
Orton Chirwa (30 January 1919 – 20 October 1992) was a lawyer and political leader in colonial Nyasaland and after independence became Malawi's Ministry of Justice (Malawi), Minister of Justice and Attorney General. After a dispute with Malawi's autocratic President Hastings Kamuzu Banda, he and his wife Vera Chirwa, Vera were exiled. After being kidnapped abroad they were tried in Malawi on charges of treason and sentenced to death. Amnesty International named the couple prisoners of conscience. Bryan Clieve Roberts
Sir Bryan Clieve Roberts KCMG, QC (22 March 1923 – 6 December 1996) was a British lawyer, civil servant and colonial administrator. Biography Born in Southsea, Hampshire, Brian Roberts attended Whitgift School in Croydon and Magdalen College, Oxford. During the Second World War he was commissioned into the Royal Artillery and Royal Horse Artillery and served in France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Roberts returned to civilian life in 1946 and was called to the Bar as a member of Gray's Inn in 1950. He entered the chambers of Viscount Hailsham, and thereafter had a spell in the Treasury Solicitor's Department before joining the Colonial legal service in 1953. He was appointed as Crown Counsel in Northern Rhodesia and rose to become Director of Public Prosecutions. Hastings Kamuzu Banda
Hastings Kamuzu Banda ( – 25 November 1997) was a Malawian politician and statesman who served as the leader of Malawi from 1964 to 1994. He served as Prime Minister of Malawi, Prime Minister from independence in 1964 to 1966, when Malawi was a Dominion/Commonwealth realm. In 1966, the country became a republic and he became the first President of Malawi, president as a result, ruling until his defeat in 1994. After receiving much of his education in ethnography, linguistics, history, and medicine overseas, Banda returned to Nyasaland to speak against colonialism and advocate independence from the United Kingdom. Cassim Chilumpha (born 29 November 1959) is a Malawian politician who was Vice-President of Malawi from June 2004 to May 2009. Later, under President Joyce Banda, he was appointed Minister of Energy and Mining in April 2012. Early life Chilumpha was born in Chiutula Village about 8 Kilometers from Nkhotakota City in the area of Chief Malengachanzi in Central Malawi. Arthur Peter Mutharika (born 18 July 1940) is a Malawi, Malawian politician and lawyer who was President of Malawi from May 2014 to June 2020. George T. Chaponda (born 1 November 1942) is a Malawian career diplomat and politician who served as Malawi's Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development from 2016 to 2017. Raphael Kasambara (26 September 1969 – 7 June 2024) was a Malawian lawyer, jurist, academic and convicted criminal who served as the Minister of Justice and Attorney General. He served twice as Attorney General under the administration of Presidents Bingu wa Mutharika and Joyce Banda, before being removed from office following allegations of involvement in the 2013 Malawi Capital Hill Cashgate Scandal.
