The Ministry of Energy () is the Israeli cabinet, Israeli government ministry responsible for energy and water infrastructure. The ministry has changed names several times since its establishment. The ministerial post was established in 1977, succeeding the position of Development Minister of Israel, Development Ministry, which had been scrapped three years earlier. The Cabinet of Israel (; ) is the cabinet which exercises Executive (government), executive authority in the State of Israel. It consists of Minister (government), ministers who are chosen and led by the Prime Minister of Israel, prime minister. The composition of the government must be approved by a vote of confidence in the Knesset (the Israeli parliament). Under Israeli law, the prime minister may dismiss members of the government but must do so in writing, and new appointees must be approved by the Knesset. Most ministers lead Ministry (government department), ministries, though some are Minister without Portfolio, ministers without portfolio. Most ministers are members of the Knesset, though only the Prime Minister and the "Deputy leaders of Israel, designated acting prime minister" are required to be Knesset members. Gonen Segev
Gonen Segev (; born 6 January 1956) is a former Minister of Energy & Infrastructure of Israel, member of Knesset, and pediatrician. In 2005 he was convicted of forgery, credit card fraud and attempting to smuggle drugs. In 2019 he was convicted of spying for Iran and was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Early life Segev was born and raised in Kiryat Motzkin. He began his mandatory military service in the Israel Defense Forces by attending the Israeli Air Force pilot course, but dropped out and moved to a combat unit, where he made it to the rank of captain. He studied medicine at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev and graduated with an M.D. He worked as a private doctor and as a farmer in Tel Adashim. Shinui
Shinui () was a Zionist, secular, and anti-clerical free market Liberalism worldwide, liberal party and political movement in Israel. The party twice became the third-largest in the Knesset, but both occasions were followed by a split and collapse; in 1977 Israeli legislative election, 1977, the party won 15 seats as part of the Democratic Movement for Change, but the alliance split in 1978, and Shinui was reduced to two seats at the 1981 Israeli legislative election, next elections. Yosef Paritzky
Yosef Yitzhak Paritzky (; 14 September 1955 – 5 October 2021) was an Israeli attorney, politician and columnist. Background Born and raised in the Beit HaKerem neighbourhood of Jerusalem, he attended high school in the Hebrew University Secondary School. Later Paritzky studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where he gained an LL.B., and went on to work as an attorney. He was an attorney both in Israel and in New York. Paritzky was known as a secular liberal who advocated for the separation of state and religion in Israel. He formed the association ''Am Hofshi'' (''Free People'') and was its chairman. Effi Eitam
Efraim "Effi" Eitam (; born 25 July 1952) is an Israeli brigadier general, former commander of the 91st Division, and politician. A former leader of the National Religious Party, he later led a breakaway faction, Ahi, which merged into Likud in 2009. He served as a member of the Knesset between 2003 and 2009. One Israel (, ''Yisrael Ahat'') was an alliance of the Labor Party, Meimad and Gesher created to run for the 1999 Knesset elections. Background One Israel was formed by Labor leader Ehud Barak in the run-up to the 1999 elections with the aim of making Labor appear more centrist and to reduce its secularist and elitist reputation amongst Mizrahi voters (Gesher was led by prominent Mizrahi politician and former Likud MK David Levy whilst Meimad is a religious party) modelled on Tony Blair's transformation of the British Labour Party into New Labour. The coalition agreement gave Gesher the number three spot on the list (behind Barak and Shimon Peres), two other safe positions and a promise that Levy would get a ministerial position. Avraham Shochat
Avraham Shochat (; 14 June 1936 – 28 February 2024) was an Israeli politician who twice served as Minister of Finance. Shochat was mayor of Arad for 20 years. Biography Avraham ("Beiga") Shochat was born in Tel Aviv during the Mandate era. After serving in the Israel Defense Forces as a corporal in the Nahal paratroopers, he attended the Technion, where he gained a BSc in civil engineering. During his studies he was elected chairman of the Student Union. Shochat was married to Tama, daughter of Israeli prime minister Levi Eshkol, with whom he had three children. Shochat was one of the founders of the modern city of Arad in 1962. As a civil engineer, he helped to plan Arad’s first permanent housing development. He worked as branch director of Solel Boneh in Arad and the Dead Sea area, and was a member of the Board of Directors of Israel Aircraft Industries and Negev Phosphates. Rabbi Eliyahu "Eli" Suissa (; born 1956) is an Israeli former politician who held several ministerial portfolios during the 1990s and early 2000s. Biography Born in Morocco in 1956, Suissa's family emigrated to Israel later in the same year. He studied at a yeshiva and was ordained as a rabbi. Despite not being a member of the Knesset, he was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs in Binyamin Netanyahu's government in June 1996. On August 7, he became Minister of Religious Affairs in addition to his existing role, but served for only five days, before Netanyahu took the post himself and then gave it to Zevulon Hammer.
