Eli Suissa
Rabbi Eliyahu "Eli" Suissa ( he, אליהו "אלי" סויסה, born 1956) is a former Israeli politician who held several ministerial portfolios during the 1990s and early 2000s. Biography Born in Morocco in 1956, Suissa's family made aliyah to Israel later in the same year. He studied at a yeshiva and was ordained as a rabbi. Despite not being a member of the Knesset, he was appointed Minister of Internal Affairs in Binyamin Netanyahu's government in June 1996. On August 7, he became Minister of Religious Affairs in addition to his existing role, but served for only five days, before Netanyahu took the post himself and then gave it to Zevulon Hammer. Following Hammer's death in January 1998, Netanyahu briefly held the portfolio again, before handing it to Yitzhak Levy. In September 1998, Suissa took over as Religious Affairs Minister again. 1999 Israeli Legislative Election
Early general elections for both the Prime Minister and the Knesset were held in Israel on 17 May 1999 following a vote of no confidence in the government; the incumbent Likud Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ran for re-election. This election was only the second time in Israeli history an election had been held for the Prime Minister's post in addition to elections for the Knesset. Ariel Sharon (; ; ; also known by his diminutive Arik, , born Ariel Scheinermann, ; 26 February 1928 – 11 January 2014) was an Israeli general and politician who served as the 11th Prime Minister of Israel from March 2001 until April 2006.
