Mining Encyclopedia
The ''Mining Encyclopedia'' ( uk, Гірнича енциклопедія) is a Ukrainian language comprehensive set of encyclopedias about the science and technology of mining. The encyclopedias were compiled by more than 100 of the leading earth scientists in Ukraine and overseas, headed by Volodymyr Biletskyy. The first installment of the project, the ''Explanatory Dictionary of Mining'' ( uk, Тлумачний гірничий словник) was published in 1998 by the Donetsk National Technical University and is now available online. The second phase of the project involved the publication of the 3-volume ''Encyclopedic Dictionary of Mining'' ( uk, Гірничий енциклопедичний словник) between 2001 and 2004. Science And Technology In Ukraine
Science and technology in Ukraine has its modern development and historical origins in the 18th and 19th centuries and is associated, first of all, with the Kyiv Mohyla Academy, University of Kyiv and University of Kharkiv. The founding of Ukraine's main research institution, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, in 1918 by Volodymyr Vernadsky marked an important milestone in the country's subsequent scientific and technological development. Ukraine's space science advanced rapidly in the aftermath of World War II, with Korolyov, Glushko and Chelomey leading the rocket and spaceflight development in the Soviet Union during the Space Race. Ukraine was ranked 57th in the Global Innovation Index in 2022, down from 49th in 2021. Ukrainian ( uk, украї́нська мо́ва, translit=ukrainska mova, label=native name, ) is an East Slavic languages, East Slavic language of the Indo-European languages, Indo-European language family. It is the first language, native language of about 40 million people and the official language, official state language of Ukraine in Eastern Europe. Written Ukrainian uses the Ukrainian alphabet, a variant of the Cyrillic script. Mining In Ukraine
Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the Earth, usually from an ore body, lode, vein, seam, reef, or placer deposit. The exploitation of these deposits for raw material is based on the economic viability of investing in the equipment, labor, and energy required to extract, refine and transport the materials found at the mine to manufacturers who can use the material. Ores recovered by mining include metals, coal, oil shale, gemstones, limestone, chalk, dimension stone, rock salt, potash, gravel, and clay. Mining is required to obtain most materials that cannot be grown through agricultural processes, or feasibly created artificially in a laboratory or factory. Mining in a wider sense includes extraction of any non-renewable resource such as petroleum, natural gas, or even water. The Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine, VNLU ( uk, Національна бібліотека України імені В.І. Вернадського) is the main academic library and main scientific information centre in Ukraine, one of the world's largest national libraries. Its main building is located in the capital of the country – Kyiv, in the Demiivka neighborhood. The library contains about 15 million items. The library has the most complete collection of Slavic writing, archives of outstanding world and Ukrainian scientists and cultural persons.
