Ming Leung Wai
Tuatagaloa Aumua Ming Leung Wai (born 1973) is a Samoan lawyer. He served as Attorney-General of Samoa from 2006 to 2016. He was educated at Marist St Joseph’s school in Samoa and the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, graduating with an LLB(Hons). He worked as a lawyer in New Zealand and Samoa before being appointed Attorney-General in November 2006. As Attorney-General he represented the government in opposing a legal challenge against switching to driving on the left. In July 2009 he helped establish the Pacific Prosecutors Association. In 2009 he filed a complaint with the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority over a 1 News story about guns and drugs in Samoa. resulting in a finding that the story was inaccurate and unbalanced. 2009 Samoa Earthquake And Tsunami
The 2009 Samoa earthquake and tsunami took place on 29 September 2009 in the southern Pacific Ocean adjacent to the Kermadec-Tonga subduction zone. The submarine earthquake occurred in an extensional environment and had a moment magnitude of 8.1 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (''Strong''). It was the largest earthquake of 2009. The earthquake initiated with a normal-faulting event with a magnitude of 8.1. Within two minutes of the earthquake rupture, two large magnitude 7.8 earthquakes occurred on the subduction zone interface. The two magnitude 7.8 earthquakes had a combined magnitude equivalent to 8.0. The event can be considered a doublet earthquake. Normal and thrust faulting triggered a tsunami which caused substantial damage and loss of life in Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga. Fepulea'i Attila Ropati (born 1968) is a Samoan judge who served as President of the Land and Titles Court of Samoa from 2016 to 2022. Fepulea'i is from the village of Saleaula. He was educated at the University of the South Pacific, University of New England and the University of Tasmania. He has previously worked as a lawyer, for the Samoa Shipping Corporation and for the Land and Titles Court. From 2008 to 2016 he was Clerk of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa. In July 2016 he was appointed as President of the Land and Titles Court, and he was sworn in on 1 August 2016. Controversy In December 2017 Fepulea'i smashed a bottle on the head of a security guard at an end of year party. In March 2018 he took leave from his position as President of the court until criminal charges were resolved. Land And Titles Court Of Samoa
The Land and Titles Court of Samoa is a specialist court dealing with Matai titles and customary land in Samoa. The Court was originally established in 1903 under the German colonial administration as a Land Commission. It was continued under the New Zealand colonial administration, and formally became a court of record in 1934, though it was not renamed until 1937. It was continued by part IX of the Constitution of Samoa, which provided it with "such composition and with such jurisdiction in relation to Matai titles and customary land as may be provided by Act". Colonial law governing the Court was repealed in 1981, and replaced with the ''Land and Titles Act 1981''. Brenda Heather-Latu
Taulapapa Brenda Heather-Latu (born 23 December 1961) is a New Zealand-born Samoan lawyer and a former Attorney-General of Samoa. She was the first woman to serve as attorney general, and the first New Zealand-born Samoan to head a Government department in Apia. She is married to former dual international rugby player and lawyer George Latu. Heather-Latu was born in Wellington, New Zealand. She attended Clyde Quay School in Mount Victoria, Wellington (1967–1974) and Wellington Girls' College in Thorndon (1975–1979) before completing degrees in arts and law at Victoria University of Wellington in 1985 and 1986. She was admitted to the bar as a barrister and solicitor in February 1987. She first worked in the Legal Division of the Dept of Education Head Office in Wellington as a law clerk (1985–1987).
