Mindfulness is the cognitive skill, usually developed through exercises, of sustaining metacognitive awareness towards the contents of one's own mind and bodily sensations in the present moment. The term ''mindfulness'' derives from the Pali word ''sati'', a significant element of Buddhist traditions, and the practice is based on '' ānāpānasati'' , Chan, and Tibetan meditation techniques. Since the 1990s, secular mindfullness has gained popularity in the west. Individuals who have contributed to the popularity of secular mindfulness in the modern Western context include Jon Kabat-Zinn and Thích Nhất Hạnh. Clinical psychology and psychiatry since the 1970s have developed a number of therapeutic applications based on mindfulness for helping people experiencing a variety of psychological conditions. Ellen Jane Langer (; born March 25, 1947) is an American professor of psychology at Harvard University; it has been claimed that in 1981, she became the first woman ever to be tenured in psychology at Harvard, She is widely known as the "mother of mindfulness" and the "mother of positive psychology". Langer studies the illusion of control, decision-making, aging, and mindfulness theory. Her most influential work is ''Counterclockwise'', published in 2009, the first test of her mind/body unity theory. Her most recent book, ''The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Chronic Health'', published in 2023, argues for the enormous control we have over our health based on mind/body unity. Early life and education Langer was born in The Bronx, New York. She grew up in a two-bedroom Yonkers apartment she shared with her parents and older sister. Sati (; '' smṛti''), literally "memory" or "retention", commonly translated as mindfulness, "to remember to observe", is an essential part of Buddhist practice. It has the related meanings of calling to mind the wholesome '' dhammas'' such as the four establishments of mindfulness, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven awakening-factors, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the attainment of insight, and the actual practice of maintaining a lucid awareness of the ''dhammas'' of bodily and mental phenomena, in order to counter the arising of unwholesome states, and to develop wholesome states.
