Mille Lacs Indian Reservation
Mille Lacs Indian Reservation is the popular name for the land-base for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe in Central Minnesota, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Minneapolis-St. Paul. The contemporary Mille Lacs Band reservation has significant land holdings in Mille Lacs, Pine, Aitkin and Crow Wing counties, as well as other land holdings in Kanabec, Morrison, and Otter Tail Counties. Mille Lacs Indian Reservation is also the name of a formal Indian reservation established in 1855. It is one of the two formal reservations on which the contemporary Mille Lacs Band retains land holdings. The contemporary Mille Lacs band includes several aboriginal Ojibwe bands and villages, whose members reside in communities throughout central Minnesota. Mississippi Chippewa
Mississippi River Band of Chippewa Indians () or simply the Mississippi Chippewa, are a historical Ojibwa Band inhabiting the headwaters of the Mississippi River and its tributaries in present-day Minnesota. According to the oral history of the Mississippi Chippewa, they were primarily of the southern branch of Ojibwe who spread from the "Fifth Stopping Place" of ''Baawiting'' (Sault Ste. Marie region) along Lake Superior's southern shores until arriving at the "Sixth Stopping Place" of the Saint Louis River. They continued westward across the Savanna Portage, and spread both northward and southward along the Mississippi River and its major tributaries. Onamia ( ) is a city in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 784 as of the 2020 census, down from 878 in 2010. U.S. Highway 169 and Minnesota State Highway 27 are the main routes in the community. History Originally, the city of Onamia was organized from the merger of two communities, the village of Onamia (Ojibwe: ''Onamanii-zaaga'iganiing'') and the village of Ericksonville (Ojibwe: ''Gibaakwa'igaansing''). The Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post is a museum dedicated to the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe's history, culture, and contemporary life. It officially opened to the public on May 18, 1996. Located in Onamia, Minnesota, United States, it is one of the 26 historical sites and museums run by the Minnesota Historical Society. History of the land The earliest records of European settlement dates back to 1884 when D.H. Robbins homesteaded near what is now the museum site, but, of course, the Ojibwe Tribe had been in the area long before European settlement. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Robbins operated a sawmill, farm and trading post on the land. Isle is a city in Mille Lacs County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 803 at the 2020 census, up from 751 in 2010. History A post office called Isle has been in operation since 1896. The city was named for the island near its harbor on Mille Lacs Lake. Geography Isle is in northeastern Mille Lacs County, along Isle Harbor at the southeasternmost extent of Mille Lacs Lake. Minnesota Highway 27 and Minnesota Highway 47 are two of the main routes in the community.
