Military History Working Group
The Military History Working Group (''Arbeitskreis Militärgeschichte'', AKM) is a German professional association and research network formed in 1995 in Freiburg. It focuses on the interdisciplinary war studies and military history. The Group's activities are coordinated out of the Historical Institute of the University of Bern. Initially chaired by historian Wilhelm Deist, it is chaired by historian as of 2017. In cooperation with Verlag Ferdinand Schöningh, the association produces the ''War in History (book series)'' (''Krieg in der Geschichte''). Purpose and organisation The Military History Working Group was founded in 1995. Wilhelm Deist, chief historian at the Military History Research Office (MGFA) was one of the founding members and, from 1995 to 2002, its chairman of the association. Professional Association
A professional association (also called a professional body, professional organization, or professional society) usually seeks to further a particular profession, the interests of individuals and organisations engaged in that profession, and the public interest. In the United States, such an association is typically a nonprofit business league for tax purposes. Roles The roles of professional associations have been variously defined: "A group, of people in a learned occupation who are entrusted with maintaining control or oversight of the legitimate practice of the occupation;" also a body acting "to safeguard the public interest;" organizations which "represent the interest of the professional practitioners," and so "act to maintain their own privileged and powerful position as a controlling body." Bernd Wegner
Bernd Wegner (born 1949) is a German historian who specialises in military history and the history of Nazism. Since 1997 he has been professor of modern history at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg, Germany. Wegner is a contributor to the seminal work ''Germany and the Second World War'' from the Military History Research Office (MGFA). His book on the Waffen-SS, published in English as ''The Waffen-SS: Organization, Ideology and Function'' by Blackwell Publishing, has been issued in Germany in nine editions (the latest being 2010) and is considered to be the standard work on the history of the Waffen-SS; concentrating on the pre-war years. Historiography Of Germany
The historiography of Germany deals with the manner in which historians have depicted, analyzed and debated the history of Germany. It also covers the popular memory of critical historical events, ideas and leaders, as well as the depiction of those events in museums, monuments, reenactments, pageants and historic sites, and the editing of historical documents. Medieval and early modern Diarium Europaeum was a journal on the history of the German-speaking lands founded by Martin Meyer (Philemerus Irenicus Elisius) and published between 1659 and 1683 in 45 volumes. Very precise editing of historic documents was a main concern in the 19th century, as exemplified by Monumenta Germaniae Historica. It published many thousands of documents, both chronicle and archival, for the study of German history (broadly conceived) from the end of the Roman Empire to 1500. Military Historiography
Military history is the study of armed conflict in the history of humanity, and its impact on the societies, cultures and economies thereof, as well as the resulting changes to local and international relationships. Professional historians normally focus on military affairs that had a major impact on the societies involved as well as the aftermath of conflicts, while amateur historians and hobbyists often take a larger interest in the details of battles, equipment and uniforms in use. The essential subjects of military history study are the causes of war, the social and cultural foundations, military doctrine on each side, the logistics, leadership, technology, strategy, and tactics used, and how these changed over time. Kerstin von Lingen (born 1971) is a German military historian who specialises in the study of war crimes. She is best known for her works on Field Marshal Albert Kesselring and SS '' Obergruppenfuehrer'' Karl Wolff. Biography Kerstin von Lingen was in born Bremen in 1971. In 1991, she entered the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg, where she studied modern history, medieval history and Italian. Stefanie Schüler-Springorum
Stefanie Schüler-Springorum (born 1962) is a German historian. Since June 2011 she has headed the Berlin-based Centre for Anti-Semitism Research (''Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung '' / ZfA). Life Stefanie Schüler-Springorum was born in Hamburg, West Germany, a year after the sudden appearance of the Berlin Wall to the east. Her father was the Tehran-born German Professor of Jurisprudence and Criminality, Horst Schüler-Springorum (1928-2015). She grew up in Hamburg, Göttingen and Munich. Her university level studies covered Medieval and Modern History, Ethnology and Political Science, taking her to Göttingen and Barcelona. She received her doctorate in 1993 from Bochum in return for a substantial piece of work on the Jewish minority in Königsberg between 1871 and 1945. Karen Hagemann (born December 17, 1955) is a German-American historian. She holds the James G. Kenan Distinguished Professor chair at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on Modern German, European and Transatlantic history, the history of military and war and women’s and gender history. She studied History, German Language and Literature, and Educational Sciences at the University of Hamburg, where she got her Dr. phil in 1989. Benjamin Ziemann (born 1964 in Berlin) is a German historian who lectures at the University of Sheffield. Since 2011, he has been Professor of Modern German History at the Department of History, University of Sheffield. Rüdiger Overmans
Rüdiger Overmans (born 6 April 1954 in Düsseldorf) is a German military historian who specializes in World War II history. His book ''German Military Losses in World War II'', which he compiled as leader of a project sponsored by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, is one of the most comprehensive works about German casualties in World War II. Biography Overmans joined the Bundeswehr in 1972, and studied economics at the Bundeswehr University Munich from 1974 to 1977.
