Milford Tunnel
Milford Tunnel is a double-track railway tunnel on the Midland Main Line in Derbyshire which runs under a hill called the Chevin between Duffield railway station, Duffield and Belper railway station, Belper. It was built in 1840 by the Robert Stephenson, Stephensons for the North Midland Railway. At long, Milford Tunnel was the second-longest tunnel on the North Midland Railway when it was built. The west side of the River Derwent, Derbyshire, Derwent valley has a number of gritstone outcrops, one being Burley Hill to the south of Duffield, another being Castle Hill in Duffield itself. The valley here however was too narrow, and already occupied by the village of Milford, Derbyshire, Milford from which the tunnel gets its name, and one of Jedediah Strutt's cotton mills. George Stephenson (9 June 1781 – 12 August 1848) was a British civil engineer and mechanical engineer. Litfield Farm is a farm in Ridgeway, Derbyshire. The farm was once regarded as being located in a hamlet east of Ridgeway known as Litfield, but is now part of the larger settlement. The farmhouse is a 17th-century Grade II listed building. Litfield, or variations of the name, are mentioned as early as the 15th century, when the name appears on the Eckington Manorial Court Rolls. Due to various families, most notable of which was the Staniforth family, being mentioned in relation to the place, it is likely that Litfield was a loose term applied to the area surrounding the farmhouse. The farmhouse appears to have been in the possession of the Staniforth family for centuries. On 24 April 1587, Robert Sitwell transferred the land to Ralph Staniforth. Absolute block signalling is a British signalling scheme designed to ensure the safe operation of a railway by allowing only one train to occupy a defined section of track (block) at a time. This system is used on double or multiple lines where use of each line is assigned a direction of travel. A train approaching a section is ''offered'' by a signalman to his counterpart at the next signal box. If the section is clear, the latter ''accepts'' the train, and the first signalman may clear his signals to give permission for the train to enter the section. The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. It amalgamated with several other railways to create the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at grouping in 1922. The Midland had a large network of lines emanating from Derby, stretching to London St Pancras, Manchester, Carlisle, Birmingham, and the South West. Francis Thompson (architect)
Francis Thompson (25 July 1808–23 April 1895) was an English architect particularly well known for his railway work. Early life Thompson was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk, Woodbridge in Suffolk, England, the second of seven children of George Thompson and his wife Elizabeth (née Miles). George Thompson was a builder and the Suffolk county surveyor, descended from a family of farmers in the nearby village of Bredfield. Francis' grandfather Jacob was also a builder and two of his uncles were architects. Thompson attended Woodbridge Grammar School and his family's background instilled him with an interest in architecture. He married Anna Maria Watson on 17 May 1830 in Woodbridge church. The couple soon emigrated to Montreal in British North America (now in Quebec, Canada). Their son, Francis Jacob, was born the following year.
