Milbank LLP (commonly known as Milbank) is an international law firm headquartered in New York City. It also has offices in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Tokyo, Hong Kong, São Paulo, Seoul, Singapore, and Beijing. History Milbank's roots are traced back to 1866, with the inception of the original firm, Anderson, Adams & Young set up in 1866 and then as Murray & Aldrich merged in April 1929, with Webb, Patterson & Hadley to become Murray, Aldrich & Webb. In 1931, the firm merged with Masten & Nichols to become Milbank, Tweed, Hope & Webb. The name was changed in 1962 to Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. Frederick Milbank
Sir Frederick Acclom Milbank, 1st Baronet (21 April 1820 – 28 April 1898), was a British Liberal Member of Parliament. Career Milbank was elected to the House of Commons for the North Riding of Yorkshire in 1865, a seat he held until 1885, and then represented Richmond until 1886. On 16 May 1882 he was created a Baronet, of Well in the County of York, and of Hart in the County of Durham. Milbank died in April 1898, aged 78. Major Sir Mark Vane Milbank, 4th Baronet, (11 January 1907 – 4 April 1984) was a British Army officer and courtier, who served as Master of the Household from 1954 to 1967. Early life He was the son of Sir Frederick Richard Milbank, 3rd Baronet and Harriet Anne Dorothy Wilson. He was educated at Eton College and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst. Military career Milbank commissioned into the Coldstream Guards in 1930, and served as the Aide-de-Camp to the Governor of Bombay between 1933 and 1938. He saw active service in the Second World War, and was awarded the Military Cross in 1945. Courtier He was Comptroller to the Governor General of Canada between 1946 and 1952, before being appointed Deputy Master of the Household. Jane Hungerford Milbank (April 10, 1871 - March 4, 1931) was an American suffragette who organized the Army of Columbians. Early life She was born on April 10, 1871, in Sparta, Georgia, as Jane Hungerford Henry. She claimed to have posed for artist John La Farge as a young woman, and to have been the model for his "Adoration" and "St. John." Activism Mrs. Milbank was best known for proposing an "Army of Columbians," a military regiment of women, during World War I, complete with a uniform she designed and wore. She held weekly training sessions for a handful of recruits, with wooden guns. "My only fear is that they will be too savage warriors," she assured doubters. She also suggested that military training might decrease domestic discord. Her program was formalized by 1915 as the International Order of Military Women, with Milbank presiding. Jeremiah Milbank (April 18, 1818 – June 1, 1884) American businessman, was a successful dry goods commission merchant, speculator in Texas territorial bonds, manufacturer, and railroad investor. His most successful business efforts were the New York Condensed Milk Company (1857, renamed the Borden Company in 1899) which he co-founded with inventor Gail Borden and the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway (1876) where he was a member of the executive committee of the Board of Directors. Milbank was a founder and president of the board of trustees of the Madison Avenue Baptist Church at 31st. Street, New York City, and trustee of the Baptist's Rochester Theological Seminary (University of Rochester). The city of Milbank, South Dakota, which is the seat of Grant County, was founded in 1880 and named in his honor. Alasdair John Milbank (born 23 October 1952) is an English Anglican theologian and is an Emeritus Professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham, where he is President of the Centre of Theology and Philosophy. Milbank previously taught at the University of Virginia and before that at the University of Cambridge and the University of Lancaster. He is also chairman of the trustees of the think tank ResPublica. Milbank founded the radical orthodoxy movement.
